As more states try to legalize sports betting this year, StatHero — a Scottsdale, Arizona-based fantasy sports company — announced Tuesday the launch of Rivals, a daily fantasy “sportsbook.”

The new daily fantasy sports game format allows users to play one-on-one against StatHero (the house), according to a news release. It currently has live games for the NBA, NFL, NHL and PGA and is operational in 32 states.

Tuesday’s national launch provides users in states where sports betting is not legal, like California, Florida, Massachusetts and Texas, a sportsbook experience while playing a game of skill.

Sports betting is now live in 20 states plus Washington, D.C., and voters in three states — Louisiana, Maryland and South Dakota — approved sports betting in November and their legislatures are working on regulations. Other states have been introducing legislation to legalize sports betting.

“For years, DFS players have yearned for an opportunity to control their own fate,” StatHero CEO Jason Jaramillo said in the news release. “A game focused on the individual, rather than beating thousands. A one-on-one game versus the house creates an experience that operates just like a sportsbook, giving users in states where betting isn’t legal the experience that they’ve been clamoring for.

“We at StatHero are excited to provide our users with the most innovative DFS platform on the market that provides greater value, more opportunities to win, and an enhanced experience that will reshape the future of DFS.”

Details of the Rivals DFS Contest

According to the news release, Rivals gives users the ability to:

  • Play one-on-one against the house: Users play against the house, rather than thousands of other users. If a user's lineup beats StatHero’s, they win. The prize goes directly to the winner and is not split amongst a group.
  • Examine lineups before the game: StatHero will reveal lineups in their entirety before each scheduled game. This is a a feature that helps players gain better insight into creating the strongest lineup possible to beat StatHero.
  • The user sets the stakes: The object of the game is winner take all, lineup vs. lineup, the player vs. the house.

DFS News Abounds

On Jan. 25, Bally's Corp. announced it was buying a daily fantasy sports company Monkey Knife Fight. Its is described as the third-largest daily fantasy company, trailing runaway industry leaders DraftKings and FanDuel.

Monkey Knife Fight has 180,000 registered users and 80,000 depositing players, Bally’s said, adding that MKF should “become an integral component of the ‘Bally's Interactive’ division, as well as contribute to Bally's growing player database.”

The same day, Caesars Entertainment made what it called a “strategic investment” in DFS platform SuperDraft.

The addition of a DFS platform enhances Caesars’ online gaming options that now include the World Series of Poker, Caesars Online Casino, and sportsbook William Hill.
