Still No Launch Date

The latest update on Louisiana sports betting came from Ronnie Johns, the head of the Louisiana Gaming Control Board during Thursday’s gaming meeting. Johns gave the latest update and noted there is still no definitive date when sports betting could go live across the state.

“I will tell you that we’re working through a process right now for the in-house licensing, as you know that’s going to come first,” Johns said at the meeting. “The 20 possible applicants are being considered right now. The state police is doing an incredible job. They got set back by Hurricane Ida, but they’re back at it.

“I’m not going to give you a definitive date when we’ll issue licenses, but it’s going to be soon.”

Several sportsbooks have hinted that a soft launch in the Bayou State could be coming as soon as this weekend. Caesars was one of those, sending out an email saying, “We are anticipating mobile soft launch within the next week, potentially before the weekend." BetMGM also emailed a message with optimism regarding sports betting going live, saying, “We are excited to announce that we are preparing for a launch of our BetMGM Sportsbook product in Louisiana!”

But John dismissed those reports during Thursday’s meeting.

“There’s been rumors about online sports betting being done very, very quickly,” he said. “There’s rumors that there will be some online sports betting this coming weekend in Louisiana. I will just say publicly that that’s not going to happen. That’s strictly rumor, and we’re going through an extensive process online with licensing. It’s a very complicated process, and we’re going to do it the right way.”

Sports Betting Delayed by Hurricane Ida

Louisiana initially targeted late September as a potential launch date for sports wagering across the state. Then it was pushed back to early October. Now, it remains unclear.

The Gaming Division at the state police department, which was tasked with reviewing the applications from sportsbooks looking to operate in Louisiana, missed 10-14 days of licensing work when Hurricane Ida struck.

The storm meant the officers in the gaming division were needed to help with the recovery process. But Johns has noted the gaming division has turned its attention to researching the applicants and vendors hoping to be a part of sports betting market in the expansion of gambling in Louisiana.

Caesars a Big Presence in Louisiana

Sports bettors in Louisiana can soon enjoy in-person sports betting at Caesars properties Harrah's New Orleans and Horseshoe Bossier City.

In-person bets can be made at temporary retail locations inside those casinos, before the unveiling of their new Caesars Sportsbooks, pending regulatory approval in the state.

"Louisiana and the entire Gulf Coast region are a special part of the Caesars family. We couldn't be more excited to build on our longstanding commitments in the state with the launch of legal sports betting," Eric Hession, Co-President of Caesars Digital, said in a news release. "We know how passionate Bayou State sports fans are about their teams and we're confident our brand-new Caesars Sportsbook app and the exciting offers we have for launch can offer them a sports experience that can't be matched."

Isle of Capri Lake Charles will be renovated into Horseshoe Lake Charles and reopen in the fall of 2022, with an additional Caesars Sportsbook location.

Caesars recently signed a 20-year, naming-rights partnership with the New Orleans Saints to rebrand New Orleans' iconic downtown stadium as the Caesars Superdome.

Caesars Sportsbook is also the official sportsbook partner of LSU Athletics.
