September was a record month for sports betting in Iowa.

According to figures from the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission, the state posted an all-time high handle of $210.4 million, up 94.1% from August’s $108.4 million. The record was also 190.7% better than September 2020’s mark of $72.4 million.

Iowa’s new handle mark highlights the impact from the NFL betting and college football betting returning. The NFL started its season on Sept. 9 when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Dallas Cowboys 31-29. College football got its start in late August and has had games throughout the week.

Online wageringmade up most of the handle, with the state’s mobile platforms taking in $186.5 million in bets, up 94.2% from August’s $96.1 million and an increase of 273% from September 2020’s $50 million.

All 18 casinos in Iowa take retail bets and also feature online sports wagering. Casion Queen in Marquette was the latest to enter the sports betting market when it reached a deal in August with Fubo Gaming.

Iowa’s record handle didn’t translate to higher revenue. September’s sports betting revenue was $5.7 million, down 13.5% from August’s $6.6 million but up 10.6% from September 2020’s $5.2 million. The state received $512,951 in sports betting taxes, up 5.4% from August’s $486,608 and was 47% higher than September 2020’s $348,828.
