New Jersey September Sports Betting Skyrockets to Record $748M

With a full month of NFL football under its belt and NBA, NHL and MLB all participating in the playoffs, New Jersey sports betting in September reached a new pinnacle at $748.6 million in total handle. That set state and U.S. records for total handle in a single month by $80 million.

The previous record, set in August, was $668 million in August. The September sports betting handle total for New Jersey of $748,588,349 was a 12.1% increase over August’s $667,979,150 and 68% over the $445,563,503 in August 2019, according to much-anticipated figures released Thursday by the state Division of Gaming Enforcement.

Prior to the New Jersey August and September total handle numbers this year, Nevada previously set the standard with $614.1 million in November 2019. It continued a trend of new handle records being set in September as each state releases their figures.

And another sportsbook will be entering the New Jersey sports betting market. Tipico, the leading sports betting provider in Germany, on Sept. 29 announced that it had received conditional approval from the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement to bring its mobile sports betting platform to the state. New Jersey will be the company’s debut in the U.S. sports betting market.

Other Key September NJ Numbers

The online handle for the top New Jersey sportsbooks in September was $678,745,374, an increase of 12.8% over August’s $601,942,486 and up 81.4% from September 2019 ($374,246,343).

That mark is also a new record for monthly mobile sports betting handle, statewide and nationally. Mobile was 90.7% of the total sports handle in September, according to the New Jersey report.

In addition to the handle and mobile numbers, the September report showed that New Jersey sports betting revenue was $45,083,178, up 14.1% from August’s $39,507,181 and up 19% from September’s 2019 number of $37,883,375.

September total gaming revenue was $323,289,671, down slightly 0.9% from August’s $326,332,958, and up 6.5% from September 2019 ($303,528,645).

The iGaming win in September was $87,663,697, also down slightly by 0.2% from August’s $87,772,968 and up 113% from September 2019’s $41,138,257.

Some reports have suggested that the U.S. sports betting handle in September could top $3 billion for the first time. Pennsylvania, Colorado and Nevada still need to report their September figures this month, among others.
