New Jersey Sets US Sports Betting Record at $803M in October

New Jersey has outdone itself again, topping $800 million in total sports betting handle in October and setting another national record.
The new record is $803.1 million, breaking its previous state and national total handle record of $748.6 million set in September. The $54.5 million increase was 7.3% better than September’s total, according to official figures released Friday by the state’s Division of Gaming Enforcement.
The October 2020 total for New Jersey of $803,096,172 was a 64.6% increase over the $487.9 million in October 2019.

The online/mobile handle for New Jersey sportsbooks in October was $743,899,049, an increase of 9.6% over September’s $678.7 million and up 78.4% from October 2019 ($417 million).
That October number is a new record for monthly online/mobile sports betting handle, statewide and nationally. Mobile was 92.6% of the total sports handle in October, according to the New Jersey report.
Lawmakers in New Jersey recently proposed allowing college sports betting on events involving state colleges and college events held in the state. New Jersey currently doesn’t allow sports betting on events involving state college teams or college events in the state. The state is also considering legislation for fixed-odds horse racing betting.

Other Key New Jersey Numbers
In addition to the handle and mobile numbers, the October report showed that New Jersey sports betting revenue also set a state record at $58,508,647, up 29.8% from September’s $45.1 million and up 26.1% from October 2019’s $46.4 million. The old mark of $53.6 million in sports betting revenue had stood since January.
October total gaming revenue was $338.1 million, up 4.6% from September’s $323.3 million and up 15% from October 2019 ($293.9 million).
The iGaming win in October was $93.5 million, up 6.6% from September’s $87.6 million and up another triple-digit figure of 106.7% from October 2019’s $45.2 million.

Other States Setting Own Records
October’s sports betting handle in Indiana was $230.9 million, up 11.3% from September’s $207.45 million. Revenue followed suit with adjusted gross revenue for sports wagering hitting an all-time high of $21.1 million, up 47.7% from September’s $14.28 million.
Iowa in October saw its highest total sports betting handle, mobile handle and revenue for a single month, breaking September’s totals. The numbers released from the state on Nov. 9 showed that Iowa recorded $81.9 million in total sports betting handle, up 13.1% from September’s $72.4 million. It was an increase of 76.1% over October 2019’s $40.5 million.
One state that couldn’t continue its momentum in October was West Virginia. The state’s total October sports betting handle was $44,633,016, down 42% from September, when West Virginia set a state record with $76,951,428.
