Pennsylvania November Sports Betting Handle Down 6.4%

Coming off an October state record for monthly sports wagering handle, Pennsylvania saw a 6.4% decrease in November.
The $491.9 million in total handle, with bets placed both online and at retail books, was down from October’s $525.8 million, according to state figures announced Wednesday by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB). The November 2020 handle was up 55.4% from November 2019’s $316.5 million.

But Pennsylvania couldn’t keep pace with New Jersey, which announced another U.S. record of $931.6 million on Monday, 16% higher than the previous mark it set in October. Even though Pennsylvania went down in November, the two states still combined for more than $1.4 billion in handle.
Mobile wagering on online Pennsylvania sportsbooks was again the clear winner among the figures released Wednesday. In November, mobile betting was 91% of the market.
But November’s online sports betting handle of $447.4 million was down 5.3% from October’s $472.3 million. It was up 67.7% from November 2019’s $266.7 million.
The state saw a modest increase in taxable gross sports betting revenue ($37.4 million), up 1.6% from October’s $35.8 million and a jump of 153.7% from November 2019’s $14.7 million.

Other key numbers in November from the PGCB report:
Table games gross revenue was $52.33 million, down 17.4% from October’s $63.33 million.
The interactive slots handle was $1.075 billion, down 3.5% from last month’s $1.114 billion.
November’s interactive slots gross revenue was $39.4 million, slightly down (2.4%) from October’s $40.3 million.
The interactive banking tables handle increased to $1.180 billion, up 8.3% from October ($1.090 billion) and interactive banking tables gross revenue also increased to $17.97 million, up 5.8% from October ($16.99 million).

FanDuel, DraftKings Lead
Among individual operators, the leader was Valley Forge Casino in Montgomery County, just north of Philadelphia, which along with online partner FanDuel posted $180 million in handle, down $5 million from last month.
The Meadows casino in western Pennsylvania with partner DraftKings was second with $112.5 million, down from October’s $123.4 million in handle.
The combined BetRivers entries, Rivers Pittsburgh ($35 million) and Rivers Philadelphia ($27.3 million) totaled $62.3 million, down about 10% from October.
Penn National’s Hollywood Casino near Harrisburg with partner Barstool Sports had $57.8 million in total handle, a decrease from the $63.8 million posted in October. Barstool launched on Sept. 18 in the state.
Another Sports Betting Platform on the Way
The PGCB on Wednesday approved BetMGM as a sports betting operator. BetMGM will soft launch its sports betting offering on Thursday and is working closely with the PGCB to go fully live shortly thereafter.
The announcement comes just 12 days after BetMGM’s online casino offering in Pennsylvania went live on Dec. 4, giving the state its 13th online casino.
BetMGM is partnering Hollywood Casino Morgantown in Caernavron Township, a “mini-casino” currently under-construction by Penn National Gaming.
The company announced in November that it will be an official sports betting operator of the Pittsburgh Steelers. BetMGM now has deals with six NFL teams: The Steelers, Las Vegas Raiders, New York Jets, Detroit Lions, Denver Broncos and Tennessee Titans.
