PointsBet Named Official Sports Betting Partner of NBC Sports

PointsBet, the Australian gaming company making inroads in the U.S. sports betting market since 2019, announced its biggest deal Thursday — a five-year agreement to become the official sports betting partner of NBC Sports.

As part of the agreement, PointsBet will have year-round media and marketing opportunities across NBC Sports platforms, including NBCSN, the Golf Channel and regional sports networks, according to a news release.

Key financial details include a total committed marketing spend of $393 million over the five years; incentives paid to NBCUniversal, the parent company of NBC Sports, for customer referrals; and a 4.9% share in PointsBet with 66.88 million options maturing in five years if approved by shareholders.

Sam Swanell, PointsBet managing director and group CEO, said becoming the exclusive, official sports betting partner of NBC Sports gives his company access to broadcasts reaching 184 million viewers and 60 million monthly active digital users.

“NBC Sports, an iconic brand and holder of the largest sports audience in the U.S., brings significant credibility and trust to PointsBet’s operations,” Swanell said in the release. “NBCUniversal’s decision to take an equity stake in PointsBet illustrates the alignment of our strategies, the trust across teams, and our shared belief that the U.S. gaming market is a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Key Aspects of the Deal

The deal has several important provisions for PointsBet:

  • It will become the exclusive provider of odds, props and trends for NBCSN and Golf Channel and their digital properties, along with Peacock, NBCUniversal’s new streaming service, and NBC Sports podcasts.
  • It also becomes an official partner of the NBC Sports Predictor app, which has more than 1.1 million downloads. It has free-to-play games for four sports (football, golf, Premier League soccer and NASCAR).
  • Rotoworld, NBC Sports’ fantasy and sports betting digital property, will use PointsBet odds.

Busy Time For PointsBet

Licensed for sports betting in New Jersey, Indiana and Iowa, PointsBet will soon launch in Illinois, Colorado and Michigan.

On Aug. 18, the PGA Tour named PointsBet as an official sports betting operator, joining DraftKings and BetMGM. PointsBet will have use of PGA Tour trademarks, be able to market on tour platforms and have access to content and video for pregame and postgame betting programming.

On Aug. 7, PointsBet became the official and exclusive partner of the professional teams and venue owned by Kroenke Sports & Entertainment in Colorado — the NBA’s Denver Nuggets, the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche, the Colorado Mammoth of the National Lacrosse League and the Pepsi Center, where the teams play.

Just two days before the Colorado deal, PointsBet became an official partner of the NBA’s Indiana Pacers.

And in between those two announcements, PointsBet announced it reached a “primary skin” agreement with Twin River Worldwide Holdings in New Jersey through Bally’s Atlantic City Casino.

On July 2, the Detroit Tigers announced that PointsBet would became the first sports betting operator for an MLB team.
