Virginia sports betting took a minor hit to its handle, dropping to $402,621,132 in November from $427,320,306 in October, or a decrease of 5.8%.

Part of the reason October was so much better was because of an extra NFL Sunday on which to collect bets.

However, this was the second-largest monthly handle in the state’s history since launching on Jan. 21, and beat September with the same number of NFL Sundays, by more than $100 million.

Though the handle was down, the state saw a 205.8% increase in adjusted gross revenue, reaching $29,926,697 in November after posting $9,785,700 in the red in October.

Bettors took home a whopping combined total of $354,284,095 as the sports betting taxes in the state also saw an increase from $1,746,204 in the red to over $4.2 million.

With that over $400 million wagered in November, this brings a grand total of more than $2.7 billion wagered in the state since legal sports betting launched, according to a Virginia State Lottery news release.

Even with one less Sunday for NFL betting, keep in mind that the local professional team, the Washington Football Team, had a bye week at the beginning of the month as well.

Handles Stay High Due to Local Fan Support

While the Washington Football team might have only played three games in November, the state still has a plethora of other professional teams to not only root for, but now has 10 options in the state for wagering.

There are the Washington Capitals from the NHL, the Washington Wizards in the NBA, and while there are also the Washington Nationals for the MLB, the Nationals’ season was already wrapped up by the time November rolled around.

Beyond professional sports, there are two prominent college teams, including the Virginia Cavaliers and Virginia Tech Hokies.

While November may have had a smaller handle compared to October, there was one less Football Team game, and October did have three Nationals games played at the beginning of the month.

On top of these online locations, players can also place bets in the Capital One Arena, which is home to the Wizards and Capitals. The Capitals will be wearing jerseys next season with a Caesars Sportsbook logo embroidered to them.

As evidenced by the increased handles, sports betting is alive and well in Virginia.

Four Virginia Casinos to Open in 2023

Virginia is one of the very few states where betting is performed on mobile devices or in the Capital One Arena. Beyond that, there are actually no land-based casinos in the state.

However, there were a few different cities authorized to be home to just a single casino, but it required approval from voting citizens.

Bristol, Danville, Portsmouth, and Norfolk were accepted and construction is expected to be completed by 2023. The proposed casino in Richmond failed.

With casinos coming to the state, this will be not only more gaming revenue for the state, but you can also expect sports betting handles to climb even higher, too.
