West Virginia Sees Huge Increase in September Betting Handle
It appears the doldrums of summer ended for West Virginia sports betting.
The state had a sports betting handle of $60,072,261 for September. And that was up from August. Way up.
In fact, it was up 168.8% from the $22,350,089 the previous month.
The mobile sports betting handle was significantly higher as well, coming in at $45,784,415, up 175.6% from August ($16,610,565).
But that’s just the start. West Virginia set a new state record with September’s sports betting revenue, $7,141,066. That was up 258.2% from the $1,993,383 in August. It’s also a good bit higher than the previous of $6,466,132, set in December 2020.
WV Sports Betting Handle & Revenue, September vs. August
|Total handle||Mobile handle||Revenue|
|Change||Up 168.8% %||Up 175.6%||Up 258.2%|
Note: West Virginia reports numbers weekly rather than by calendar month. September represents Aug. 29-Oct. 2; August represents Aug. 1-28.
iGaming Numbers Also Up
September’s iGaming handle also took a nice jump in West Virginia, coming in at $232,145,577, up 63.6% from the August total of $141,871,113.
iGaming revenue in September was $6,170,537, up 38% from August ($4,471,480).
Football Sparks Boost
Like most states, West Virginia saw an increase that coincided with football season. NFL betting has been a big boost to most markets.
West Virginia allows college football betting on in-state teams. The WVU Mountaineers are 2-3 with a good win and a couple of close losses on their resume.
The state is also one of the few where basketball might be as big as football. The Mountaineers have a long history of hoops success and could be a hot item when it comes to college basketball betting.
So this increase in betting numbers should continue for the next few months.
