William Hill Launches Sportsbook App in West Virginia
William Hill launched its sportsbook app and website in West Virginia Friday, making it the fourth state where its app is live. The William Hill sportsbook app in West Virginia can be downloaded on any Apple or Android device anywhere in the state or by visiting its website, according to a news release. William Hill has a partnership with Mountaineer Casino & Racetrack in New Cumberland.

In going live, William Hill offered new customers who open an account and make a digital deposit a 100% match up to $150, plus a $10 registration bonus. The first bettor on the site made wagers on the PGA’s Tour Championship, college football, MLB and the NBA, according to William Hill. At the West Virginia Lottery Commission meeting on Aug. 26, members were told that the William Hill sportsbook app would be testing this week before going live.
Friday’s launch gives bettors a chance to take advantage of a busy Labor Day sports weekend — Kentucky Derby, NBA, NHL and MLB — and lets William Hill have its mobile app up and running before the NFL season begins on Sept. 10.

William Hill Expansion
In July, when the Eldorado-Caesars merger was finalized, William Hill took over Caesars sportsbooks because it had been the exclusive sportsbook for Eldorado properties since September 2018. That gave William Hill 170 sportsbooks in 13 states — a market share of 29%, according to the company.
On July 31, William Hill opened the first sportsbook at a professional sports venue in the U.S. at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.
A day later, William Hill opened its first Illinois retail sportsbook at the Grand Victoria Casino Elgin. William Hill also said it will soon offer mobile sports betting there after regulatory approval by the state.
And just this week it closed its acquisition of CG Technology sportsbooks in Las Vegas, putting William Hill sportsbooks in some of The Strip’s iconic properties. In a first-half earnings report on Aug. 3, William Hill CEO Ulrik Bengtsson said the company has made “excellent progress in our U.S. business,” making it clear he sees big opportunities in the U.S. in the second half of the year.
West Virginia’s Gaming Market
The state’s casinos started to reopen on June 5 with new social distancing and health measures in place. Will Hill in July had their strongest mobile sports betting since February. The mobile handle for July was just under $11.2 million, a 94.5% increase from June’s $5.7 million. Total sports betting handle was $15.9 million in July.
And in mid July, West Virginia went live with iGaming. DraftKings and BetMGM casino app products are now active. Online casino gambling and poker are legal in West Virginia, making it one of five states with iGaming options.
