Betting Tips

Wimbledon is the oldest and most prestigious tennis event in the world. It is played on outdoor grass courts at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London and was conceived and inaugurated in 1877. On this page you will find useful information to help enforce your Wimbledon betting strategy. As with all tennis betting, staking a punt on a Wimbledon game can be entirely unpredictable.

The high stakes nature of the tournament can lead to copious amounts of pressure for players and as such, there are always some inevitable surprises. There are a variety of Wimbledon betting markets available before and during the event. As with most other sports, there has been a rise in punters deploying an in-play strategy when it comes to Wimbledon, looking at everything from the server betting market to the ‘win current game’ market.

When planning your betting strategy, It’s important to keep up to date with the happenings at previous tennis tournaments. Check out the Wimbledon order of play and see if any players that are due to take part in the Championship have had recent injuries or are experiencing a dip in form. In a Grand Slam such as Wimbledon that contains multiple competitions under one tournament banner, an outright bet is a punt on the winner of a specific trophy. That trophy could be for the men’s or women’s singles or doubles events, a juniors competition or even a masters event. Always be careful with favourites and place your bets carefully with this information in mind.

Wimbledon Tournament Format

Wimbledon features a 128-player main draw for the men’s and women’s singles events. Since 1975, Wimbledon has relied on the rankings provided by the ATP for the men’s draw and the WTA for the women’s draw. Wimbledon retains the right to change them slightly if they please, and will often seed players who have performed well on grass. The seeding system in tennis is designed to keep the best players in the tournament for as long as possible. The doubles competitions have 64 pairs in the draw. They play one round less and the top 16 doubles pairings are seeded.

Wimbledon, like many major betting events, comes with plenty of upsets. Court 2, known as the “Graveyard of the Champions” has seen champions like Serena Williams, Virginia Wade, Pete Sampras and Richard Krajicek exit the tournament in the opening week there. Very few sports offer more betting markets than tennis, and Wimbledon has always been a massively popular event in this sphere. The majority of top tennis bookies offering a deluge of markets around the time of the competition and outright betting opportunities long before the first ball is served.

Popular Wimbledon Betting Choices

Wimbledon Betting Odds

Odds are used by bookmakers to reflect how likely it is that an event will have a specific outcome. A coin toss is an excellent example, where the implied probability would come to a 50% chance of getting either heads or tails. Online bookmakers in general calculate what they believe to be the genuine probability for each outcome in a sporting event. Wimbledon odds will generally be slightly below what a bookmaker believes is the real probability of a particular outcome. A number of different formats can be used when it comes to Wimbledon odds. When given decimal odds, multiply the number by your initial stake to find out what your total return would be. Fractional odds show you how much you will win on a wager relative to each unit you stake.

Value Bets for Wimbledon

When it comes to Wimbledon betting, the most important thing to do is identify value betting opportunities. A value bet opportunity is when you consider the chances of a given outcome to be greater than the probability implied by the bookies’ odds. Let’s say that an online bookmaker is offering Roger Federer at odds of 13/5 - an implied probability of 27.8% - to win the men’s singles trophy. If you think the probability of Roger Federer winning is much stronger than this, at around 70%, then you have identified a value opportunity.
