2019 Oscars Best Bets: Best Picture, Actor, Actress & More

Quick Tips

It’s a bit of an odd year at the Oscars. There’s no clear-cut consensus on what was the best movie of the year. There was no Titanic or La La Land that the critics loved above everything else, which means the categories are wide open.

At the same time, it seems like there is clear-cut agreement on the individual honors at the 2019 Academy Awards, with many sizable Oscars betting favorites in the major categories. Let’s take a closer look at the betting lines for main categories and see where there’s some value on the board.

Best Picture: Green Book

While it looked like there would be a lot of contenders for this category, it seems like we’re really down to two movies: Roma (-305) and Green Book (+375). There are six other flicks in the running but all of them are at +1400 or higher.

I do like taking a shot with Green Book here at +375 with 888Sport, though, as the lines seem to be far too slanted with Roma. Yes, there is plenty of criticism and controversies but Roma has more working against it than the odds suggest.

Roma is a foreign-language film and Netflix won’t release box office data, for whatever reason. Green Book has already received the Golden Globe and Producers Guild’s top prize. Those can be a good tell.

Roma probably wins but this is neck-in-neck but the odds don’t reflect that. That being the case, I’ll take a shot with Green Book.

Best Actor: Rami Malek

One of the most obvious awards of the evening should be the award for the Best Actor. There are five nominees in the category but we’re looking at just two options who are below +2000. Christian Bale (+400) is second in line, but is still quite the long shot for his role in Vice because Rami Malek is the heavy favorite (-670 with SugarHouse) for his role in Bohemian Rhapsody.

Malek has already won this category at the Satellite Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards and Golden Globe Awards. He’ll be taking him the golden statue too.

Best Actress: Glenn Close

What started out as one of the most wide-open categories in the fall has now become a runaway. There are five women in the running for Best Actress, but four are at +500 or higher (three at +1700 or higher) and one is a heavy favorite. Glenn Close (-835 with 888Sport) is expected to walk away with this award.

Close is one of the all-time acting greats that’s never won an Oscar, so this will be one of the sentimental stories of the evening. She’s been nominated and lost six times and is aiming to take the award home with lucky number seven for her role in The Wife.

She won the Golden Globe, the Satellite Award, the Screen Actors Guild and the Critics’ Choice, so the Academy would really have to pull a shocker not to give this award to her.

Best Director: Alfonso Cuaron

Alfonso Cuaron is one of the biggest favorites in Oscars history in this category. He’s sitting at -3335 at SugarHouse and is about as much of a lock as one can be. He’s swept the board through awards season with his work on Roma and this will just be the final cherry on top.

At this price, it’s not worth a bet. But he’ll win.

Best Supporting Actor: Mahershala Ali

Another category with a sizable chalk is the Best Support Actor where Mahershala Ali (-1667 with 888Sport) is all but a shoe-in. Some even felt that he should be in contention for Best Actor, but he and Viggo Mortensen co-star, so he was fit into this spot.

There’s actually quite a bit of competition in this category as Richard E. Grant (+900), Sam Elliott (+1400), Adam Driver (+3000) and Sam Rockwell (+5000) were all fantastic this year. However, given that Ali already took home the award at the BAFTA’s, the Golden Globes and SAGs, it would be a real shock if he didn’t win the Oscar.

Best Supporting Actress: Regina King

While many categories are expected to be runaways, this is one that could be competitive. There are five women nominated for this award and three of them are inside of +700. Regina King (-250 at SugarHouse) is the clear-cut favorite but Amy Adams (+400) and Rachel Weisz (+650) are not too far off.

Adams is a threat to pull off the upset. While she was outstanding in Vice, it doesn’t feel like a role that the Academy typically loves. King has also won the Golden Globe in this category, so it feels like she’s a safe bet – even if you have to lay a little bit of money.
