6 SEC Football Best Bets to Consider Backing in Week 12

6 SEC Football Best Bets to Consider Backing in Week 12

Have a home improvement project you’ve been putting off? A family gathering you need to attend? A root canal you’re looking to schedule? Well, SEC football fans, this is your weekend. The Saturday before the big rivalry games is always a lull, and this one is no exception.

Let’s put it this way: when the SEC on CBS game — “the best game from the best conference every week,” they call it — is 6-4 Missouri at 5-5 Tennessee, it might be time to go mow the lawn.

But fans of college football betting are not here looking for entertainment; they’re looking for value, and even this weekend offers some options.

  1. Missouri at Tennessee

The line: Missouri -6 at 888Sport

Jeremy Pruitt has lifted Tennessee to the cusp of bowl eligibility in his first season as head coach, but it’s taken a few ugly victories to get there. No question, that Vols defense has shown improvement over the course of the year, as has starting quarterback Jarrett Guarantano.

But we’re not sure a slog against Charlotte and a victory over plummeting Kentucky mean the Vols are ready to hang with the best offense they’ve seen since Alabama.

Missouri’s defense has issues, but the Tigers are often able to score enough to make up for it, and expect that trend to continue in Knoxville against the worst total offense team in the SEC. Bet Mizzou -6 with 888Sport.

  2. Ole Miss at Vanderbilt

The line: Vanderbilt -2.5 at SugarHouse

Hide the women and children for this clash of 1-5 SEC teams. The Commodores are probably the more balanced team overall, especially with tailback Ke’Shawn Vaughn — who’s rushed for 172 and 182 yards, respectively, in his past two games — back in the lineup.

Ole Miss is the classic great-offense, no-defense outfit, consistently losing games despite scoring tons of points. But it remains difficult to trust Vanderbilt, in any capacity, especially this late in the season when most of its own fans have already turned their focus to basketball.

Vandy’s defense isn’t Ole Miss-bad, but it’s far from great, either, and this time watch for quarterback Jordan Ta’amu and the Rebels to generate enough offense to win. Take Ole Miss +2.5 with SugarHouse.

  3. Mississippi State vs. Arkansas

The line: Mississippi State -20.5 at SugarHouse

Arkansas remains the only SEC program still winless in conference, and that’s unlikely to change this week.

The Razorbacks put up more of a fight than most expected last weekend against rival LSU, but the trip to Starkville brings a matchup against a Mississippi State defense so good, the offensively-depleted Hogs will be hard-pressed to score.

The Bulldogs’ offense remains inconsistent, getting shut out by Alabama after averaging 36.5 points in its previous two games. But that rushing attack behind quarterback Nick Fitzgerald should control tempo, and the defense will do the rest.

Mississippi State should have little difficulty covering that relatively large spread; bet them with SugarHouse.

  4. Middle Tennessee State at Kentucky

The line: Kentucky -14 at 888Sport

Two weeks ago, Kentucky played for the SEC East title. Now, fans in the commonwealth are legitimately worried about Middle Tennessee State. That’s how badly things have gone that quickly for the Wildcats, now the lowest-scoring team in the league.

Their passing game is nonexistent, they haven’t scored more than 17 points in a single game since September, and Josh Allen and that great defense can’t do it all by themselves.

Now in comes Middle Tennessee State, with a legit quarterback in Brent Stockstill, and averaging 30 points per game. The Wildcats are two-touchdown favorites at home, but everything suggests they’ll have to sweat this one out. Take Middle Tennessee State and the points with 888Sport.

  5. Texas A&M vs. UAB

    The line: Texas A&M -17 at 888Sport

The Blazers have been one of the most reliable against-the-spread teams this season, covering eight times in 10 games, including seven straight before winning in overtime last weekend.

The once-cancelled program has roared back to enjoy the best season in school history, and has a real-deal running back in Spencer Brown. And yet … it’s awfully hard to see that run continuing in Kyle Field, even against a Texas A&M squad that’s suffered through some ups and downs.

The combination of the SEC’s best rush defense and the league’s leading rusher (Trayveon Williams) should be enough for the Aggies to cover at home. Bet Texas A&M -17 with 888Sport.

  6. LSU vs. Rice

The line: LSU -44 at 888Sport

LSU’s offense is decidedly middle of the road in the SEC, due in large part to a passing game that’s all but disappeared in recent weeks. It’s one thing to get shut out by top-ranked Alabama; another thing altogether to have to sweat one out against winless-in-league Arkansas.

And yet, this is a bad team coming to Death Valley this weekend. A really, really bad team. Rice beat Prairie View A&M in its opener and hasn’t won since; the Owls now sport a 1-10 record and are allowing 37.5 points per game.

LSU’s largest margin of victory this season is 31 against Southeastern Louisiana, and the Owls are a far worse team. Take the Tigers and give the 44 points with 888Sport.
