ACC Week 10 Betting Tips and Picks: Top Games to Consider

Quick Tips

  • Bet Virginia to cover -7 at SugarHouse
  • Bet Clemson to cover -38.5 at SugarHouse
  • Bet Virginia Tech to win outright for +102 at SugarHouse

Clemson is well on its way to winning the ACC Atlantic Division for a fourth consecutive year. That much is apparent. The rest of the conference, however, is less settled with plenty still to be determined with the sorting out beginning this weekend where two of the three co-leaders in the Coastal Division play. Here is a look at this weekend’s key matchups.

Pittsburgh at #25 Virginia (-7)

Pittsburgh’s rollercoaster season of appearing good one week, mediocre the next continued with a 54-45 victory over Duke last weekend. The Panthers now travel on the road to take on a Virginia team that’s won three straight games and five of the past six, a matchup between two programs tied for first (along with Virginia Tech) in the Coastal Division.

Virginia features a run-stopping defense allowing just 113 rushing yards per game, 20th-best in the country and conceding only 18.8 points per game. This poses a problem for the Panthers, whose one-dimensional offense is centered on being able to effectively run the ball. Pittsburgh rushed for 484 yards and four touchdowns in its win over Duke, but is unlikely to find similar success against Virginia.

If the Panthers cannot move the ball on the ground their offense figures to be in for a long afternoon. Pittsburg starting quarterback Kenny Pickett is more of a game manager than someone who’s going to make a defense pay for cheating against the run. The sophomore has not thrown for more than 200 yards or two touchdowns in a single game this season.

Virginia isn’t lacking for playmakers at the quarterback position. Bryce Perkins can use his arm or legs to beat teams, having thrown for 1,623 yards and 15 touchdowns while also running for 575 yards and six touchdowns. And versus Pittsburgh’s 93rd-ranked rushing defense, Perkins should have ample opportunity to make plays.

Take Virginia to win and cover the -7 spread on Sugarhouse.

Louisville at #2 Clemson (-38.5)

A 38-point spread is an exceedingly high number in a game between two Power 5 schools, but there are reasons to think that maybe this spread isn’t high enough. Not only is Clemson as good as advertised -- the Tigers have decimated their last three opponents by a combined 142 points -- but Louisville is an unmitigated mess, having lost five straight games that includes several blowouts.

Clemson is clicking on both sides of the ball, and an already well rounded team has become even more so with freshman quarterback Trevor Lawrence continuing to emerge as he grows more comfortable every week. The Tigers are averaging the sixth-most points per game (44.1) in the country and are tied for first in scoring defense (13.0), while Louisville has difficulty both scoring (22.3 PPG, 116th in the country) and stopping other teams from scoring (36.3 PPG, 115th in the country).

It isn’t a question of whether Clemson is going to win, only a question of how much. Expect the Tigers to do to the Cardinals what they’ve done to their past three opponents and win by covering the spread, even if it’s at -38.5.

Take the Tigers to win and cover the spread.

#22 Boston College at Virginia Tech

Two teams coming off diverging games a week ago, with Boston College getting a big home win over Miami while Virginia Tech was routed by a visiting Georgia Tech.

The Hokies usually formidable defense was steamrolled by a Georgia Tech offense that racked up 465 yards -- all on the ground with the Yellow Jackets only attempting a single pass. It was an atypical performance for the Hokies, who must now try to harness BC’s star running back AJ Dillon, the ACC preseason player of the year.

Dillon showed no rust versus Miami rushing for 149 yards on 32 carries after missing the previous two games with an ankle injury. BC coach Steve Addazio said he expects an increase in Dillon workload as he goes against a Hokies defense giving up 171.9 yards per game (ninth in the ACC).

Despite Lane Stadium being an unwelcoming experience for the visiting team, the Eagles are -2.5 on SugarHouse. BC is good enough to cover that spread, but if Virginia Tech’s defense can find a way to bottle up the Eagles offense the Hokies are good enough to pull the upset.

Take Virginia Tech to win outright for +102 at Sugarhouse.
