ACC Week 8 Betting Tips and Picks: 3 Best Games to Bet

Clemson squaring off in an undefeated showdown with an Atlantic Coast Conference foe is not an unusual occurrence. But the Tigers doing so against North Carolina State is not something that occurs with any regularity.

And yet here are the Tigers welcoming the Wolfpack to Death Valley in a game that carries both conference and national title implications. Here what college football betting fans should consider in this match and other key games in the ACC.

  1. No. 16 North Carolina State at No. 3 Clemson

A showdown between the ACC’s last remaining undefeated teams, which also happen to both be without loss outside the conference. For Clemson, a win is step toward another berth in the National Championship Playoff. Meanwhile, a North Carolina State victory would bolster a résumé noticeably devoid of a signature win.

Clemson is balanced on offense, but is most successful running the ball. That puts talented freshman quarterback Trevor Lawrence in situations where he doesn’t have to carry the load.

The Tigers are averaging nearly 281 yard rushing per game, fourth-best in the nation, with Travis Etienne the main cog as he’s averaging a whopping 9.2 yards per carry with 11 touchdowns.

Clemson’s strength on offense is a strength for NCSU on defense, with the Wolfpack third against the run in the ACC. The Wolfpack also don’t allow many points, only 16.8 per game, 16th-best in the country -- with the caveat that they have yet to face a team of Clemson’s caliber.

The Wolfpack will seek to exploit a Clemson secondary via its prolific passing attack, with quarterback Ryan Finley leading the ACC in passing yards, completion percentage and yards per attempt, and wide receiver Kelvin Harmon second in receiving yards.

But the Tigers defend the pass well, giving up the second-fewest passing yards per game in the ACC and tied for third in sacks.

A spread of 16.5 points, via 888Sport, is a big margin between conference rivals. Especially considering neither team has yet to lose this season, and with the Wolfpack taking the Tigers down to the wire in each of the past two years.

Clemson, however, is the more complete team and gets the advantage of playing at home. The Tigers win, but fail to cover, so grab NC State and the 16.5 points with 888Sport.

  2. North Carolina at Syracuse

If this were basketball game, it would be a marquee attraction this weekend. Instead, it is matchup featuring a program headed the wrong way and a still-rebuilding team dealing with back-to-back defeats and struggling to get over the proverbial hump.

Syracuse could conceivably be 6-0 heading into this game, as its losses to Clemson and Pittsburgh in consecutive weeks were by a total of 11 points and both occurred on the road. The Orange welcome a North Carolina team that is 1-4, though it’s lone win did come against Pittsburgh.

UNC has struggled on offense without much success finding the end zone, while its defense has had issues keeping teams from scoring. The Tar Heels rank 121st in points per game (20.6) and are 104th in scoring defense, allowing 33.8 per game.

That is a bad formula against Syracuse, which has a balanced offense and can score -- 43-points per game, tied for 11th nationally -- and a defense that, although not great, should be able to contain UNC’s middling offense.

Syracuse is a much better team playing at home than on the road, and that is the difference Saturday. Expect the Orange to be able to put up points, while the Tar Heels offense is unable to keep pace. Take Syracuse to win outright and cover the -10 spread on SugarHouse.

  3. Virginia at Duke

Virginia has emerged as the surprise team in the ACC, sitting 2-1 in conference and coming off an upset home win over Miami. The Cavaliers can further prove their legitimacy with a road win over Duke (5-1 overall, 1-1 ACC), which would be Virginia’s third straight win in the series.

Duke has looked quite good at times this season, including road wins at Northwestern and Georgia Tech, but also lost at home to an injury-decimated Virginia Tech team.

The Blue Devils defense shut down Georgia Tech last week, and has been the strength of the team this season ranking third in in the ACC in scoring defense and fifth in total defense.

The Cavaliers also possess a good defense, third-best in total defense within the ACC (allowing 327.0 yards per game) and conceding the third-fewest first downs. And facing a Duke offense 10th in the ACC in total offense, this gives Virginia an advantage.

But Duke, a touchdown favorite at SugarHouse, is playing at home and starting quarterback Daniel Jones, who missed two games due to injury earlier this season and looked sharp against Georgia Tech, throwing three touchdowns in the third quarter.

Duke will win a tightly contested game, so take Virginia +7 with 888Sport.
