American Athletic Basketball Tournament 2019 Odds and Picks

American Athletic Basketball Tournament 2019 Odds and Picks

Just a couple weeks ago, it looked like the American Athletic Conference was only going to have Houston and Cincinnati in the NCAA tournament, with UCF on the bubble. A pair of upsets later and getting upset, the Knights are firmly in and Temple is on the inside of the bubble.

It was never in any doubt that Houston was going to win the regular season, but UCF showed the Cougars are still mortal, even within their own conference. The top teams look fairly fluid at the moment, which makes basketball betting on the American all the harder.

March Madness is in full effect in the American; the title is absolutely up for grabs.

AAC 2019 Conference Tournament Betting Tips

Best Bet: Houston +120 at SugarHouse

Despite everything, Houston should still be the favorite to win the AAC with very good reason. They didn’t lose their first game until a week into the new year, including crushing a non-conference schedule with Oregon, LSU, BYU, and Utah State.

Corey Davis Jr. has been simply phenomenal. The guard is averaging 16.6 points per game, putting up a career high 31 at Cincinnati to claim the AAC regular season. But as good as he’s been, the whole team steps up in big games, and plays a stingy defense. Their 61.6 points allowed per game is good for a top 10 spot in the nation.

Beyond that, they just…win. 29-2 on the season is almost impossible. Only Gonzaga and Virginia match Houston in the losses column. And given those two losses, it’s a testament to the strength of the American that both losses game in conference.

Simply put, Houston doesn’t lose, which makes them a strong bet going into the American Conference Tournament.

Best Non-Favorite Bet: UCF +450 at DraftKings

It’s real tough between UCF and Temple as the best non-favorite bet, so we’ll call UCF the non-favorite and Temple the dark horse. Reason being: they both beat Houston. Cincinnati didn’t.

UCF gets the first nod because of their recent results. They ended the longest home-winning streak in the country, knocking off Houston by 5, then following it up with an upset over Cincinnati in Orlando.

They key here is Houston. Had UCF not beaten the Cougars, they’d likely not be considered much of a contender for the American title. However, they’ve done it in one of the toughest houses in college basketball, and they’re still sitting at +450.

There are some reservations to the Knights. They notably lost to an off-year Wichita State, and got steamrolled at Memphis. And as much good press as Tacko Fall gets, UCF could see their star man get into trouble if refs begin calling him for, what some consider, over-aggressive use of elbows.

Dark-Horse Pick: Temple +1100 at PointsBet

Now let’s dig into the Owls. They’re slightly more vulnerable to the random clanger than UCF, most notably losing at Tulsa. However, they come into the AAC tournament with the slightly better form.

They ended the season on a 3-game winning streak, including an upset at UCF to end the regular season. They lost their only meeting with Cincinnati by 4, and beat Houston the first time the two met this season.

Shizz Alston Jr., aside being on the all-name team, is averaging just under 20 points a game, but Temple is a balanced team anyway with a solid bench. Scoring is a bit top-heavy between Alston Jr., Quinton Rose, and Nate Pierre-Louis, but they can still go 4-deep into the bench.

If the Owls want to make a run, they’ll need to stay consistent and shut down opposing shooters. Their last loss saw Jeremiah Martin of Memphis drop 30 on them, and Houston's Davis Jr. drop 24 back in late January.

Long-Odds Flier: South Florida +8000 at PointsBet

Once you get past Temple, it’s pretty much a toss-up. Between Memphis, Wichita State, and South Florida, you might as well go with the highest odds, which goes to South Florida. Plus the Bulls boast wins over both of those teams.

The Bulls limp into the tournament having lost 6 of their last 8, hence the extremely long odds. South Florida entered February with a chance to replace UCF on the NCAA bubble, but the 23-point loss in Orlando began a skid that looks to have ended all post-season hopes.

Similarly to Temple, the Bulls lack consistency, plus an unfortunate penchant for turnovers. And for the team that gets the most free throws in the nation, South Florida only shoots 64% from the line.

But the young team have shown signs of putting it together. They don’t rely on one player’s scoring like Memphis and Martin, and can go deeper into the bench than Wichita State. Will they win the AAC? Probably not. But for a team that’s been on the edge of turning the corner all year, +8000 is hard to ignore.
