Big 12 Betting Tips and Picks: Week 8 Games To Consider

Quick Tips

  • Bet Oklahoma to cover -8 vs. TCU on 888Sport.
  • Bet Texas Tech to cover -19.5 vs Kansas on SugarHouse.

Week 7 showed that Jack Trice is indeed where Top 10 teams go to die. Unfortunately, the Cyclones are off this week. Although the Big 12 schedule is a bit thin this week with six teams on bye, the slate of game still offers intrigue. Here’s look at Big 12 college football betting matchups and what you need to know.

Oklahoma at TCU

The last time the Sooners were on the field was two weeks ago versus Texas, a game where the Longhorns shredded Oklahoma’s defense with such ferocity the Sooners had little recourse but to fire defensive coordinator Mike Stoops the following day. But it’s not as if TCU has any momentum on their side, having lost three of its past four games including a 17-14 defeat to Texas Tech last week.

Although their defense has repeatedly given up big plays, Oklahoma is still the superior team to TCU and this shapes up to be a bounce back for the Sooners. On offense the Sooners are electric, ranking first in yards per play in the country, averaging the fifth-most points per game and ninth in total offense. Even against a stout TCU defense ranked 13th nationally in average total yards per play, the Sooners still should be able to control the Saturday’s game with QB Kyler Murray making plays with his arm and legs.

The Horned Frogs don’t have an offense to go toe-for-toe with the Sooners. TCU will need to control the ball and limit turnovers to give themselves a chance; the latter of which the Horned Frogs struggled with against Texas Tech giving the ball away three times.

For this game to be close, the Horned Frogs need their usual A-game on defense and hope everything comes together on offense, and that’s going to be a bit too much to ask for. So bet Oklahoma to easily cover the -8 spread on 888Sport.

Kansas at Texas Tech

Texas Tech defeated TCU last week because of the stellar play of its defense, an unusual occurrence for the Red Raiders under head coach Kliff Kingsbury. The Red Raiders had a rare misfire, scoring just 17 points and not moving the ball with much effectiveness. Some of that was attributed to star quarterback Alan Bowman missing the game due to a collapsed lung, and some to TCU fielding one of the best defenses in the country.

Kansas does not have the same caliber of defense as TCU, nor is the Jayhawks offense a unit that terrifies defensive coaches. The Jayhawks are last in yards per play and have scored the third-fewest points in the Big 12, futility that prompted Kansas to fire offensive coordinator Doug Meacham last week.

What Kansas does have going for it is an opportunistic defense that can create turnovers. The Jayhawks lead the Big 12 with an average of three turnovers per game, and their plus-13 turnover margin is tied with Florida for tops in the country. And with how frequently Texas Tech throws the ball, Kansas will have myriad opportunities to ball hawk on Saturday.

Seeing Kansas put up a competitive effort would not be surprising. Texas Tech, however, has too many weapons on offense not to eventually assert itself and pull away in the second half. Bet the Red Raiders win and cover the -19.5 spread on SugarHouse.
