Big Ten Week 6 Betting Tips: Top 5 Games Worth Betting On

A half dozen Big Ten games are on the slate this week, including four divisional matchups. Before the season started many prognosticators predicted the conference had the potential to produce a number of College Football Playoff contenders.

But that was before any games were played.

Only Ohio State remains undefeated overall with a 5-0 record, although Wisconsin, Michigan, Maryland and Michigan State have not yet lost a conference game -- albeit with a small sample size. That figures to change as conference play heats up as soon as this weekend.

It’s going to take some might big upsets among the current college elite, such as from Clemson or Notre Dame, for a door to open wider that a Big Ten school not named OSU can race back into the playoff picture.

But for now, all any team can do is take care of the business at hand and keep putting W’s on the board. Here’s what college football betting fans should consider this week:

  1. Indiana at No. 3 Ohio State

Last week the Buckeyes pulled off a huge win on the road against Penn State in one of the season’s biggest games to date. Sure OSU prevailed thanks to some questionable play calling down the stretch by PSU coach James Franklin, including his decision to run on fourth and five.

Quarterback Duane Haskins was 22 of 39 for 270 yards and three touchdowns. Ohio State’s offense ranks fourth nationally in total yards per game (557.0) and pass efficiency, sixth in scoring (49 points per game) and eighth in passing (346.6 yards per game). But many believe there’s more to come.

Indiana is off to a 4-1 start that has been shaky at times but is still impressive. They beat a bad Rutgers team by only a touchdown last week and it’s hard to see the Hoosiers D stopping Ohio State’s offensive prowess.

It’s a big number but bet Ohio State -25 at SugarHouse.

  2. Maryland at No. 15 Michigan

The Wolverines were impressive against Northwestern last Saturday, coming back from a 17-0 deficit to score 20 unanswered points in their road win. It was the largest Michigan comeback since 2011. And after allowing 105 yards in the first half, they gave up just 97 yards the rest of the way.

Maryland continues to swim through the murkiness of the off-the-field news that has been associated with the team since the death of Jordan McNair in June to heat stroke and coach DJ Durkin’s leave of absence.

But the Terps are 3-1 and have had success on the ground ranking 11th in the nation rushing the ball for 258.5 yards per game.

That won’t be enough to fend off Michigan shooting for its fourth straight win in the school series. Take Michigan -17 with 888Sport.

  3. Nebraska at No. 16 Wisconsin

The Huskers are a mess. There’s no polite way to say just how bad things have been for head coach Scott Frost’s team. They are 0-4 this season and on an eight game losing streak dating back to last year.

Wisconsin has started to show what was expected at the outset of the season. Running back Jonathan Taylor has rushed for at least 100 yards in every game this season and the sophomore leads the nation in rushing yards per game at 157.0.

But while the final outcome should not be in doubt, there are questions whether the Badgers can cover a pretty big number at 18.5. If Nebraska finds a way to be hanging around in the fourth quarter Wisconsin will have trouble covering the line.

    Bet Nebraska +18.5 with 888Sport.

  4. Northwestern at No. 20 Michigan State

The Spartans kick off what looks to be a demanding slate in the next several weeks with conference games against Northwestern, Penn State, Michigan and Purdue. MSU stumbled out of the gate against Arizona State but has since righted the ship.

Quarterback Brian Lewerke hasn't been great throwing as many interceptions (five) as touchdowns. Lewerke passed for just 185 yards last week against Central Michigan.

Northwestern has lost three straight, and coach Pat Fitzgerald’s team continues to struggle on both side of the ball. Last week’s loss to Michigan at home after leading by 17 was particularly biting.

Michigan State at home will be enough to cover the spread. Bet MSU -11 with SugarHouse.

  5. Iowa at Minnesota

A pair of teams coming off a bye week set to square off in Minnesota Saturday afternoon. Neither have a conference win but both are 3-1.

These schools are pretty evenly matched statistically, and it’s hard to give a nod to the Gophers as the home team given the close proximity of TCF Stadium to Hawkeye Nation. The difference maker will be between Iowa QB Nate Stanley and his Minnesota counterpart Zack Annexstad.

The nod goes to Iowa, so bet the Hawkeyes -7 at with 888Sport.
