Big Ten Week 8 Betting Tips: Top 5 Games Worth Betting On

The reality is that after high hopes coming into the new season only two Big Ten schools remain in contention for the College Football Playoff.

Ohio State, ranked No. 2 in the country, has been in that picture since opening day and remains there in Week 8. Michigan after a shaky start has at least an outside chance but the Wolverines, who carry a No. 6 ranking into the intrastate Michigan State game this Saturday, is on thin ice.

While a national title is out of reach for the others, a division and conference championship are still goals for a number of teams. It sets up some intriguing matchups this weekend that carry playoff implications as well as a rivalry game or two.

Here are five games college football betting fans should consider:

  1. No. 6 Michigan at No. 24 Michigan State

You have to go back to 1898 to find the first time Michigan played Michigan State in college football. The Wolverines have dominated 69-36-5, and after MSU won last year’s tilt at The Big House 14-10, this week things shift to the Spartans’ home.

Since the opening-week loss to Notre Dame, Michigan has been on a roll. The running game has led the way, and last week’s win over Wisconsin saw running back Karan Higdon go over 100 yards for the fifth straight game.

The talented Higdon has 10 career 100-yard rushing games and Michigan is undefeated when he breaks the century mark on the ground.

Michigan State went into Penn State last week as huge underdogs and came out of Happy Valley with a 21-17 victory thanks to its defense.

Offensively MSU is sputtering and injured. Lead running back LJ Scott has missed four straight games with an injury, and he'll be questionable once again against the Wolverines.

Quarterback Brian Lewerke has not lived up to preseason expectations. He's only eighth in the Big Ten in yards per pass attempt (7.1) and 10th in passer rating (124.76).

This will be close, but there’s too much going in Michigan’s favor right not to let this one slip through its fingers and completely erase the CFB hope. Bet Michigan -7 at SugarHouse.

  2. No. 2 Ohio State at Purdue

This one could get ugly in a hurry. The Buckeyes steamroll their way to West Lafeyette to take on a 3-3 Purdue team coming off a 46-7 thrashing of Illinois. Hopefully the Boilermarkers remember the joy of a week ago.

There is just way too much of everything for Ohio State, led by prolific quarterback Dwayne Haskins, who threw for 412 yards last week in a win over Minnesota after putting up 455 against Indiana the previous week.

He’s tossed for 28 touchdowns and 2,331 yards so far to keep him in the Heisman Trophy conversation.

David Bough has been a nice comeback story for Purdue, returning after last year’s broken ankle, but there’s no way he can match up with Haskins. Back Ohio State and give the 13.5 at 888Sport.

  3. No. 18 Penn State at Indiana

Penn State needs a rebound after the loss to Michigan State, and Indiana might be just what the doctor ordered. The Hoosiers are on a two-game losing streak getting crushed 42-16 last week against Iowa.

For whatever reason, PSU quarterback Trace McSorley was flat in last week’s puzzling Michigan State loss. He has more than a good chance to bounce back against a soft Indiana secondary.

Indiana head coach Tom Allen has lost to seven ranked conference foes by an average margin of 20 points. It may not be that large a margin on Saturday, but the losing streak should reach eight.

    Take Indiana +14.5 at SugarHouse.

  4. Illinois at No. 23 Wisconsin

The Badgers saw their CFB hopes evaporate with a giant egg laid last week against Michigan. Their banged up defense was without sophomore defensive end Isaiah Loudermilk and senior safety D'Cota Dixon. Loudermilk will miss a second straight game with a left ankle injury suffered against Nebraska.

But running back Jonathan Taylor remains the nation’s second leading rusher and averages 158.3 yards a game. That doesn’t bode well for an Illinois defense that last week gave up 611 total yards on offense to Purdue, the third team to post 591 yards or more against the Illini.

But this is a big spread and Illinois can cover. So grab Illinois and the 25 points at 888Sport.

  5. Northwestern at Rutgers

The resurgent Wildcats have climbed to the top of the East Division, turning in another dramatic win last week against Nebraska. Clayton Thorson threw a staggering 64 times last week, and he’ll have the chance for more target practice against Rutgers.

These teams last met in 1991, and Rutgers won that game by a score of 22-18. The Scarlet Knights will remember that day as the “good old days” after what should be a Northwestern romp in New Jersey.

    Bet Northwestern -20 at SugarHouse.
