College Bowl Betting Stocking Stuffers: Top Non-Major Bets

Quick Tips

  • Bet Syracuse +2 over West Virginia with 888Sport.
  • Bet Iowa State +4 over Washington State with SugarHouse.
  • Bet Oklahoma State +8 over Missouri with SugarHouse.
  • Bet Penn State -6 over Kentucky with 888Sport.

The New Year’s Six bowl games may attract the majority of the national spotlight when it comes to college bowl betting, but beyond the Cotton, Fiesta, Orange, Rose and Sugar bowls there are some intriguing post-Christmas bowls worth a look. Here’s a look at the five most intriguing matchups that are worthy of college football betting fans’ attention.

Top Non-Major College Bowl Bets

Camping World Bowl (Dec. 28)

The line: No. 16 West Virginia (-2) vs. No. 20 Syracuse at 888Sport

Over/Under Total: 68.5

This is one of the best matchups among the secondary bowls, featuring two of the most explosive offenses in the country. Even with West Virginia star quarterback Will Grier opting to sit out, there is every expectation that this will be a shootout.

The over-under is actually lower than anticipated, making it likely to be surpassed. The deciding factor on who wins likely hinges on whichever defense can best slow the opposing team, and with Grier not playing that favors Syracuse.

Take both the Orange to win and the over with 888Sport.

Alamo Bowl (Dec. 28)

The line: No. 13 Washington State (-4) vs. No. 24 Iowa State at SugarHouse

Over/Under Total: 54.5

Instead of being in a better bowl that it probably deserves, Washington State gets to face a plucky Iowa State team that has upset West Virginia and Oklahoma State this season. The Cougars are noted for their dynamic offense during the regular season, but under Mike Leach WSU’s that offense has frequently fallen flat in bowl games.

The Cougars are 1-4 during Leach’s tenure and have only scored more than 20 points once. If that trend continues the Cougars will have a tall task versus an Iowa State team that is balanced on offense and has defense that allowed the fewest points and second-fewest yards in the Big 12.

Take the Cyclones to pull the upset and beat the Cougars at SugarHouse.

Liberty Bowl (Dec. 31)

The line: No. 23 Missouri (-8) vs. Oklahoma State at SugarHouse

Over/Under Total: 72.5

This has all the makings to be a high-scoring affair and one of the more entertaining games of the bowl season. The over-under is second only to the 81 points set for the Orange Bowl between Alabama and Oklahoma.

Both Missouri and Oklahoma State are pass-happy offenses, though the Cowboys have uncharacteristically struggled to move the ball at times this season. If Missouri gets rolling and OSU cannot get in sync, this could get ugly.

But more likely is that this is a back-and-forth game with whichever team possessing the ball last emerging with the victory. The Tigers win but fail to cover.

Take Oklahoma State +8 at SugarHouse.

Gator Bowl (Dec. 31)

The line: No. 19 Texas A&M (-5) vs. North Carolina State at SugarHouse

Over/Under Total: 58

North Carolina State quarterback Ryan Finley has quietly put up terrific numbers this season, leading the ACC in total passing yards and passing yards per attempt, and tied for first in passing touchdowns.

He’ll be opposing a Texas A&M team that has improved steadily throughout the season and with a win will certainly garner a lot of buzz heading into next year. If this turns into a shootout that favors the Wolfpack.

However, if Aggies running back Trayveon Williams, who led the SEC in rushing yards, can get going against a Wolfpack defense allowing just 109.1 rushing yards per game Texas A&M should win. Take the Aggies to win a close contest that sees them fail to cover the -5.

Take NC State +5 at SugarHouse.

Citrus Bowl (Jan. 1)

The line: No. 12 Penn State (-6) vs. No. 14 Kentucky at 888Sport

Over/Under Total: 48

Two 9-3 Power 5 teams that could’ve been in bigger bowl had the schedule shaken out differently, but also two teams that view this bowl from different perspectives.

Kentucky earned its first New Year’s Day bowl since 1998, coming off a season where it posted a winning record in the SEC for the first time in 41 years and won nine regular season games for the first time in 41 years.

Penn State had aspirations of making the College Football Playoff, but losses to Ohio State, Michigan State and Michigan ended that possibility.

Penn State is more rounded on offense, while Kentucky is rather one-dimension and relies heavily on running back Benny Snell to make plays. If the Nittany Lions can shut down the Wildcats rushing attack, they should be able to neutralize the Wildcats and pull away. Bet Penn State -6 with 888Sport.
