College Football Betting: 5 Hottest Teams to Back Week 13

College Football Betting: 5 Hottest Teams to Back Week 13

Oh sure, there are conference championships and bowl games to come, and a few teams have hurricane-postponed contests rescheduled until next week, and the College Football Playoff still looms ahead.

But for all practical purposes, this is it: the final week of the regular season schedule. Sunday, many teams will be packing up the helmets and shoulder pads until spring practice. With a few exceptions, anyone playing beyond this weekend has earned it.

So, savor it my friends, and perhaps benefit from it as well. In the hopes of sending you out on a high (and lucrative) note, here are five hot teams to consider when betting college football this week.

  1. Notre Dame

Hey, life is great when you’re undefeated, right? But the Fighting Irish right now are more than unbeaten — they’re also covering, with a nice three-week streak of winning both on the scoreboard and against the spread.

This weekend was truly impressive, as Notre Dame throttled a nationally-ranked Syracuse team that earlier this season almost won at Clemson.

Saturday the Irish head to Southern Cal, which is in the midst of a down season, and where coach Clay Helton is in serious hot water after a loss last weekend to a truly terrible UCLA team.

The Trojans have failed to cover in four of their last five games, while the Irish are a 10-point favorite with 888Sport and one win from sewing up a College Football Playoff berth. The math is easy on this one.

  2. Pittsburgh

Ladies and gentlemen, meet your ACC Coastal Division champions! Or is it Atlantic Division? Who knows. Regardless, Pitt and that ground-gaining, clock-eating running game will play Clemson for the ACC title next weekend.

But first comes a regular-season finale between two old Big East rivals, with the Panthers traveling to Miami. Pitt has covered in six straight games and is a 5.5-point underdog to the Hurricanes, who beat up on a disappointing Virginia Tech team last week to end a skid of five straight losses against the spread.

Pitt’s not showy, but that rushing game has proven to be effective, and it’s what gives the Panthers a chance every week.

  3. Navy

So, it hasn’t been the best of football seasons at the proud U.S. Naval Academy. But the 3-8 Midshipmen have still managed to cover three of their last four games, winning outright last week against Tulsa, and the week before that giving imaginary national champion — and 23.5-point favorite — Central Florida an unexpected tussle in an 11-point loss.

This week Navy and its triple-option head to Tulane, where the Midshipmen are a 7-point underdog to a very mediocre Green Wave team.

Navy’s suffered through a tough season, but the Midshipmen have still covered against the three best teams on their schedule — Notre Dame, Central Florida and Memphis — and can do the same in New Orleans.

  4. Middle Tennessee State

Wait, is one of the best games of this weekend really in Conference USA?

Quite possibly. Middle Tennessee hosts UAB on Saturday in a matchup of two of the best teams in the league, and a stark clash of styles: the Blue Raiders and their pass-oriented offense behind quarterback Brent Stockstill, and the Blazers’ running game behind tailback Spencer Brown.

UAB had been one of college football’s most consistent covers until stumbling the last few weeks, while Middle Tennessee has covered four in a row, including at Kentucky last weekend. The Blue Raiders are 1.5-point underdogs at home but have been the better team as of late.

  5. Mississippi State

A few weeks ago, the Bulldogs’ offense had stalled and questions persisted as to whether starting quarterback Nick Fitzgerald should turn things over to his backup for a few series.

Mississippi State has been on a nice run since, winning three of four both overall and against the spread, the exception being a 24-0 loss to Alabama that was hardly an embarrassment.

Ole Miss’ vaunted offense was largely kept in check last week by Vanderbilt, and now the Rebels face the best scoring defense in the league. Mississippi State is a 10-point favorite in a Thanksgiving night Egg Bowl that could turn into a rout, given how terrible the Rebels’ defense is, and how effectively the Bulldogs are playing on both sides of the ball.
