Having been made to work hard for their opening day victory over Chievo, Juventus host their first home game of the 2018/19 season when they welcome Lazio to Turin on Saturday evening. The clash continues a tough start to the campaign for the visitors, who already have a loss to Napoli in the books before taking on the Bianconeri. Lazio boss Simone Inzaghi told DAZN the following:
“I don’t think we deserved to lose, as it all happened in 10 minutes. We had played well and allowed Napoli practically nothing, but lacked that concentration we needed in these games. I’m afraid we had some players who only started training on August 2-3 and I had to use them tonight. The fixture list wasn’t kind either with a difficult start, but we’ve got to roll our sleeves up and get to work.”
While those comments do not reflect the superiority of Napoli’s performance, Inzaghi and Lazio will know they will need to be much much better this time around, particularly as Cristiano Ronaldo will be looking to impress his new fans as he makes his home debut at Juventus Stadium.
Lazio enjoyed a superb 2017/18 campaign, one they punctuated with not one but two victories over Juventus. The first came in last August’s Supercoppa Italiana as they ran out 3-2 winners in Rome, but in following that up with a sensational 2-1 triumph in Turin they became the first Serie A side to win away at Juve in over two years.
Paulo Dybala saw a late penalty saved in that game, a result which also ended a streak of unhappy visits to Turin. The past four meetings saw Juve win by a comfortable margin, outscoring Lazio by nine goals to nil and also snatching a 1-0 triumph in Rome when they met again back in March.
It is difficult to look beyond yet another victory for the Bianconeri this time around and backing them to do so is available at odds of 19/50 with Paddy Power.
The ability of Juventus to pile up goals against Lazio has been well documented, with that aforementioned streak of results highlighting their ability to find the back of the net. Furthermore, Juventus have scored at least two goals in seven of their last eight home matches in Serie A and in each of their previous six meetings with Saturday’s opponents in Turin.
But Lazio too have been in prolific form, netting more goals last term (89) than any other Italian side. There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 22 of Lazio's last 24 away league games, while they themselves have scored twice or more in five of their last six away games and have largely retained the team that was so dangerous in 2017/18.
With Juve having scored at least two goals in seven of their last eight home matches, a look at over 2.5 goals which is available at 7/10 with Bet365. Perhaps it is also worth backing the Bianconeri to hold Lazio scoreless again, with the same bookmaker offering odds of 6/5 on Juve winning without conceding a goal.
It was tough going against Chievo last week for Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese star’s first competitive outing for Juventus seeing him fail to score as the opposition marshalled him well and goalkeeper Stefano Sorrentino was in rare form.
Only four of CR7’s nine shots were on target, but the veteran stopper was equal to each of them, pulling off a string of excellent saves before being forced off following a heavy collision with the Ballon d’Or winner.
However, Ronaldo’s goal scoring in recent seasons has been as reliable as is has been relentless, and it is well worth considering him netting when he plays at Juventus Stadium for the first time since earning a standing ovation there with Real Madrid last term. Ronaldo being the first goal scorer is available at odds of 10/3 with BetVictor, with the same bookmaker offering 5/6 that the former Manchester United man nets at any point during the game.
