NASCAR Food City 500 Odds, Tips & 6 Drivers to Bet

The second short track race of the season is up for NASCAR’s Cup Series with Sunday’s Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway.

The high-banked Tennessee facility is one of the most unique stops on the schedule. Picture the Rose Bowl with a 0.533-mile race track inside, banked nearly 30 degrees at each end, and you have Bristol.

Joe Gibbs Racing (four wins) and Team Penske (three) have dominated the season’s first seven races and both organizations have drivers among the favorites to find Victory Lane on Sunday.

For those who enjoy NASCAR betting, here are six drivers to consider backing in Sunday’s Food City 500.

  1. Kyle Busch (+250)

He is a seven-time Bristol winner and the only driver to finish in the top 10 in every race this season. Busch has the most victories among active drivers at the track and considers Bristol a favorite that fits his wide-open style of driving. Bet Busch to win at +250 and -162 to finish 1st-3rd with SugarHouse in New Jersey.

  2. Brad Keselowski (+700)

Keselowski’s recent numbers don’t indicate a frontrunner on Sunday. However, those finishing positions are not a true depiction of Keselowski’s prowess at the track.

A spate of mechanical issues and bad luck with late accidents have derailed Keselowski from putting much better numbers on the board in the past several seasons. Bet him to win at +700 and +175 to finish 1st-3rd with 888Sport in New Jersey.

  3. Kyle Larson (+700)

It has been a miserable start to the year for Larson, who has yet to win a race. He has led 142 laps this season, all in Week 2 at Atlanta, where a late speeding penalty on pit road took him from contention to win.

Bristol should be the magic elixir for Larson, who has finished second in the past two races at the track and has a string of four straight top-10s on the line Sunday. Bet Larson to win at +700 and +175 to finish 1st-3rd with SugarHouse.

  4. Chase Elliott (+1500)

The Hendrick Motorsports driver was third last August at Bristol. He’s another driver that demands a look beyond the numbers because Elliott’s finishes have been sketchy; he was 29th and 18th in his previous two Bristol races before last fall, when he finished third.

He has an average finish of 12.7 in six career starts at the track and was second in the year’s first short track race, on March 24 at Martinsville Speedway. Bet him to win at +1500 and +375 to finish 1st-3rd with 888Sport.

  5. Kurt Busch (+1800)

The top-10 machine cranked out another one by finishing ninth last week in Texas, giving him five in the year’s opening seven races. Many in the garage believe the veteran, Kyle’s older brother, is on the cusp of finding Victory Lane very soon.

Bristol will be a tremendous opportunity for Busch, who won the track’s most recent race last summer. Busch was fifth in the fall 2017 Bristol race and in the past 10 races there, he is seventh in laps led with 191. Bet Kurt Busch to win at +1800 and +175 to finish 1st-3rd with SugarHouse.

  6. Erik Jones (+1800)

Here’s a true sleeper who came back last week at Texas for a top-five finish after spinning earlier in the race. Jones has four career Bristol starts with a second-place and a fifth-place finish.

In his rookie season of 2017, Jones dominated, leading 260 of the 500 laps from the pole before finishing second. He is a member of the powerhouse JGR team, which seeks victory No. 5 in 2019. Bet Jones to win at +1800 and +450 to finish 1st-3rd with 888Sport.

2019 Food City 500 Betting Tip

Dizzying speeds are expected at Bristol, which will impact the racing from a couple of standpoints. Track position will be important because the thought is that the faster the cars go around the high-banked track, the more difficult passing will be. That puts a premium on pit road performance and teams with better crews can pick up spots there.

Among those with the most pit road penalties this year, with infractions such as speeding, uncontrolled tires or too many men over the wall – all punishable by going back to the rear of the field – is Denny Hamlin. He won after two such infractions last week at Texas, but that won’t be an easy task at the tight Bristol layout.

A good starting spot will also be at a premium. Thirty-eight winners in 116 Bristol races have come from the front row. Making up spots further back in the field is expected to be more difficult because of the rules so good starting positions are even more vital.
