Valero Texas Open Betting Tips, 2019 Odds & Golfers to Back

Quick Tips

The Lowdown

It’s a new date for the Texas Open, but not a new pre-Masters destination. Not, at least, in terms of region because in recent years the Lone Star State has hosted the traditional final test ahead of Augusta National. For most of that time the Houston Open did the honors and would provide a challenge as Augusta-like as possible to encourage players to participate, but now the Texas Open takes over.

The tournament is closing in on its 100th anniversary (it was first held in 1922) and boasts some great names on its champion’s roll-call – the likes of Walter Hagen, Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer and Lee Trevino.

In recent years, however, and especially on this track (first used in 2010) there have been many shock winners. Here’s what fans of golf betting need to know:

The Course

The Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio is a Greg Norman design that comes in at 7,435-yards and plays to a conventional par of 72. It has Bermuda grass greens overseeded with Bent and Poa, while the fairways and rough are Bermuda overseeded with ryegrass.

The stats say that the fairways are harder to hit than average, the greens average in size and the speed of them also typical – three factors which don’t exactly shout a similar test ahead of Augusta.

Winner's Profile

Looks for cowboys. Well, maybe not in the sense that you want a golfer who can ride a horse and shoot at the same time, all at high speed with scant regard for his own safety, but definitely in the sense that Texas specialists thrive here.

Adam Scott, the first winner on the course, has four wins in the state, all of them on different courses, and Charley Hoffman, champion in 2016, has a total of no less than 23 top-25s in Texas.

Billy Horschel

Although this event has mostly been played in late April (when hosted by the San Antonio Club), in 2013 it was the final pre-Masters test, and in 2014 and 2015 it was the penultimate one.

Twice in that spell Horschel finished third here and on the first of those occasions, in 2013, he held a two-shot 54-hole lead. He added a fourth place in 2016 and was 11th last year so he clearly loves the test.

He’s also a winner elsewhere in Texas (at Las Colinas) and was second at Houston. He enjoyed a very hot stretch of form late last season (four top-3s in seven starts), and while he’s not been that strong in recent times, he hasn’t missed a cut since late July and has seven top-30s in 2019. Bet him at +2400 with PointsBet.

Kevin Tway

Last year Andrew Landry won here off the back of four missed cuts and a T43rd, Steven Bowditch’s form was little better (three missed cuts and a T37th), and frankly Kevin Tway’s is currently even worse (six missed cuts and a T43rd).

But he does boast very strong Texas form. Indeed, he hasn’t finished outside the top 40 in his last seven starts there including ninth and fifth in his last two appearances.

Moreover he was third in this event, and on the course, in 2017. His father was second in this tournament back in 2003, and you can go to SugarHouse and back him at +2200 to grab a Top-5.

Charley Hoffman

As has already been mentioned the 42-year-old Californian is a past winner on the course and he’s also a cast-iron Texas specialist. His course record alone would make you sit up and wonder because it includes seven top-20 finishes in nine starts, with a win three years ago and a second in 2011.

But he also has another 15 top-20s in Texas that includes victory on the Web.com Tour, second at Las Colinas, sixth at Houston, eighth at La Cantera and 10th at Colonial. In other words, he’s no one-track pony.

A few weeks ago you’d have been hard pushed to shout his claims because he’d made just one cut in seven starts for the calendar year. But a T18 at the Valspar Championship doubled that tally and, in addition to that fondness for the region and the course, he has another incentive.

Hoffman has always played the Masters rather well. In five trips he’s never been outside the top 30, he was second at halfway in 2015, first at the same stage in 2017 and T12th last year. He’ll want to maintain the momentum of his last outing, ready for next week.
