Australian Poker Pro Charged Over Fatal 2017 Crash in Sydney

Warwick Mirzikinian, a 49-year-old poker player, crashed into 24-year-old cyclist Julien Trameaux, who was working as a food courier at the time of his death. Mirzikinian was at the wheel of a Tesla electric car that hit the rider in Double Bay, one of Australia’s most expensive residential suburbs, on Monday, November 13th, 2017.

The death marked the fifth cyclist fatality on the New South Wales roads in Australia in 2017, with a further 51 pedestrians having been struck and killed. Trameaux, who died at the scene of the crash, had worked for UBEREats as a delivery cyclist at night after finishing his day shift as a labourer for Pimas Gale Construction.

According to 9news, he set himself a three-year plan to open a French patisserie in Sydney. Mirzikinian was named as the driver of the car after the occurrence, but he was not officially charged at the time. Now, however, he has been charged and accused of dangerous driving occasioning death and negligent driving occasioning death.

Mirzikinian's Victim Remembered

Site manager for Pimas Gale Construction said of Trameaux after he died in November:

“He was a legend of a person. He was the type of person who had a bucket list. He had never run in a marathon but came 151st in the Sydney Running Festival in September. He worked on a number of our sites over 18 months and worked with many project managers so he’ll be missed. He would be working away and would ask if he could get anyone a drink. You can’t train initiative. He had a generous heart. I really feel for his parents.”

According to news.com.au, Leo Villaume, who lived with Trameaux, said:

“He was more than a friend, we were all a family and he was a brother. He was someone so determined.”

Steep Downfall for a Poker Pro

Mirzikinian, a millionaire, runs various companies alongside being a poker pro, including Strathfield Group Ltd., which sells home, office and automobile entertainment systems. From his achievements, Mirzikinian had bought a lavish home in the same area as Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. Last year his four-bedroom house made headlines in Australia when a sinkhole opened up outside.

His most recent professional poker action included two wins in 2017 and a top 30 finish in January of 2018, all of which were events centered around no-limit hold'em. Mirzikinian finished first in both the 2017 Sydney Championships (A$20,000 No-Limit Hold'em) and 2017 PokerStars Championship Bahamas ($1,075 No-Limit Hold'em Turbo), and then finished 27th at the 2018 Aussie Millions.

Lengthy Prison Sentence Now Real Possibility

Reports have indicated the first offense carries a possible prison sentence of up to 10 years for Mirzikinian, while the second “provides for up to 18 months behinds bars”. Mirzikinian could also be fined for than ten-thousand dollars and possibly face legal action from Trameaux’s family. While Mirzikinian still remains a free man, he is legally obliged to appear in an Australian court on April 18 to respond to charges.

Mirzikinian, an expert of online poker, has a myriad of tournament wins behind him, having been involved in the Australian poker scene for more close to 10 years. He first won at the Aussie MILLIONS series in 2008 and he continued to play at tables up until January of this year.

His total live tournament earnings equate to around $756,000 and his largest single cash win came at the 2017 Sydney Championships where he more than $197,000. After winning the Star Sydney Championships 6-Max event, Mirzikinian said, “I am going to do so much winning that people are going to get bored of me winning.”
