With their first preseason game only a month away, the NFL's New York Jets are receiving unwanted attention for rumored off-the-field action.

A scandal involving Jets starting quarterback Zach Wilson has given New York tabloids fodder for the slow summer weeks.

The New York Post recently ran a story headlined, “Inside Jets quarterback Zach Wilson’s dramatic, soap opera love life.”

Social Media Barrage

The allegations about Wilson recently took flight after his former girlfriend claimed Wilson slept with his mother’s friend, the Post reported.

Wilson, a former Brigham Young University quarterback, has not spoken publicly about the matter.

Wilson’s ex-girlfriend, Abbey Gile, now is dating his former college roommate, Washington Commanders wide receiver Dax Milne, according to the Post.

The story has sparked a social media onslaught, including jokes about BYU’s nickname — the Cougars. On its website, Barstool Sports has begun selling a Jets-green T-shirt alluding to Wilson, using sexual slang.

Wilson’s mother, Lisa, a 49-year-old health advocate and dance instructor in Utah, has spoken out online, regarding an unrelated incident, about “Satan” finding a way onto social media “without you even noticing.”

Impact On Betting Odds

How this will impact the Jets on-field performance and sports betting odds is unclear.

The Jets travel to Philadelphia to play the Eagles on Aug. 12 in the first preseason game for both teams. The Eagles are favored by 1.5 points at DraftKings Sportsbook.

The Jets’ first regular season game is at home on Sept. 11 against the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens are six-point favorites at FanDuel Sportsbook.

Jets Have Room To Improve

Jets fans are hopeful the team can improve on last year’s 4-13 record and even make a run at the playoffs.

Much of the team’s success hinges on Wilson’s performance. Listed as 6-foot-2 and 214 pounds, Wilson is thought by some to be undersized, but he is expected to do better this season with a beefed up offensive line.

An improvement would be welcomed. Wilson’s 69.7 passer rating was worst in the NFL last season. He threw more interceptions (11) than touchdowns (9). His backup going into training camp is veteran Joe Flacco.
