5 Hot College Football Teams to Consider Betting: Week 9

Even though last weekend featured key games for a pair of national championship aspirants going in opposite directions — Clemson and Ohio State — it was hardly the most robust Saturday given the number of teams that took the week off midway through the schedule.

We’re back to a loaded slate against this coming weekend, which offers another opportunity to build on victories or move past any bad beats from a week ago.

Toward that end, college football betting fans can get their wagering week off to a good start by taking a look at these five hot teams worth considering for this weekend.

  1. Florida

So far, Dan Mullen has managed to do what his predecessor Jim McElwain couldn’t: squeeze enough offense out of a challenged Gators attack to go along with a defense that’s stout enough to keep Florida in most games.

Feleipe Franks will hardly be confused with Danny Wuerffel, but the beleaguered quarterback has helped the Gators rise to fifth in the SEC in scoring offense. Florida has won five straight against the spread and covered in six of seven games this season, the aberration being the 31-year streak-buster against Kentucky.

Now the Gators travel to Jacksonville to take on Georgia, which feasted against an easy first half of its schedule and was completely unmasked two weeks ago in a whipping at LSU.

Both teams had an off week to prepare, and the Gators enter as a 7-point underdog with SugarHouse. But they’ve found a rhythm on both sides of the ball, and managed to surprise higher-ranked opponents — just ask LSU and Mississippi State — so far this season.

Ride the Gators and take the points at SugarHouse.

  2. Utah

They’re not the most well-known team in the Pac-12, but the Utes just keep taking care of business, as they did last week in manhandling USC for their third consecutive victory both against the spread and overall.

Utah boasts that effective combination of a great rushing offense and a great rushing defense, allowing it to dictate tempo and shorten the game by keeping opposing offenses off the field.

On Friday night Utah will travel to Los Angeles to take on underwhelming UCLA, which despite the presence of mastermind Chip Kelly features the worst scoring offense in the league to go along with one of the Pac-12’s worst defenses.

That’s a dangerous combination when facing the Utes, who enter as 10-point favorites at 888Sport and poised to beat up on another SoCal foe. Bet the Utes.

  3. Texas A&M

They’re overshadowed by a certain crimson and white juggernaut in their own division, but Texas A&M continues to win games and climb the rankings in Jimbo Fisher’s first season at the helm.

Kellen Mond is growing into the kind of quarterback Kevin Sumlin only wished he’d had, and the Aggies have established themselves as one of the top defenses in the SEC.

Texas A&M has covered in six of seven games this season, the exception a sleepwalk past lowly Arkansas, and now travel to a Mississippi State team that’s underperformed somewhat in Joe Moorhead’s first season, thanks to an offense that’s struggled to find consistency.

Take the Aggies as a 3-point underdog with 888Sport because they do everything better than the Bulldogs on both sides of the ball, and no amount of clanging cowbells in Starkville will change that.

  5. Iowa

The Hawkeyes have strung together three straight victories against the spread and overall, although they’ve come against opponents from the bottom half of the Big Ten.

This week brings a stiffer challenge in Not-So-Happy Valley, where Penn State is probably still reeling from an upset loss to Michigan State that almost certainly knocked them out of the playoff picture — at least, it looked that way in a slugfest against Indiana last week.

Iowa remains in the thick of the West Division hunt, with the kind of tough rushing offense and tough rushing defense that can keep the Hawkeyes in just about any game.

Bet the Hawkeyes as a 5.5-point underdog at SugarHouse. They’ve been much more consistent this season than the Nittany Lions, who have either lost or looked quite beatable in each of their last three games.

  6. Kentucky

It isn’t pretty, but it’s effective. Kentucky just lines up and tries to run over you, on both sides of the ball.

The Wildcats are powered by a star tailback in Benny Snell Jr. and a defense that absolutely terrorizes opponents, a combination that’s kept Kentucky on Georgia’s heels in the SEC East and on pace to win 10 or 11 games overall.

Another victory should come this weekend at Missouri, which presents one of the worst defenses in the league, even if Kentucky’s somewhat ineffective quarterback situation is up in the air.

The Wildcats haven’t been the most consistent team against the spread, splitting their last six, but they still don’t merit being a touchdown underdog at Mizzou. Bet Kentucky +7 with 888Sport.
