5 Hot College Football Teams You Should Bet in Week 10

A new college football betting week is upon us, and it promises to be dominated by one game that will take in every square inch of oxygen in the sport’s universe: No. 1 Alabama at No. 4 LSU, a prime-time clash on Saturday night to be played before 100,000 overserved denizens of the bayou.

But don’t be fooled: From a wagering perspective, there are many solid options on offer beyond this year’s Game of the Century in Tiger Stadium.

To that end, here are five hot teams to consider this week, with the goal of building on some past victories or leaving some bad beats behind. Pull up a chair, a cold Abita and some gumbo, and enjoy.

  1. Iowa State

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, we are jumping on the Cyclones bandwagon and riding it until the wheels fall off. Iowa State has won five of six against the spread, including four in a row, and has morphed from an injury-plagued question mark to one of the more complete teams in the country.

Running back David Montgomery, the Big 12’s top rusher, is healthy again and bowling people over. Freshman dual-threat quarterback Brock Purdy stepped behind center, and immediately upgraded the position.

The defense is among the best in the conference. The Cyclones handled Texas Tech last week as a 5.5-point favorite, after their previous three victories against the spread came as underdogs.

They’re a 14.5-point favorites with 888Sport this week at perennially moribund Kansas. Bet the Cyclones.

  2. UAB

Wait, isn’t this the program that was killed off, and then revived, just a few years ago? Indeed, and the Blazers’ resurrection is in full effect. Alabama-Birmingham is 7-1 overall and has won six straight games against the spread, the most recent a 19-0 victory at UTEP as a 14.5-point favorite.

UAB has that efficient combination of a great rushing offense and a great scoring defense — ranking first in Conference USA in both categories — and Spencer Brown is one of the best tailbacks you’ve never heard of.

The Blazers are a 21.5-point favorites with SugarHouse this Saturday against Texas-San Antonio, which is 3-5 overall and losers of two straight. Back the Blazers.

  3. Washington State

The Cougars just keep winning, and just keep covering — barely. Washington State won by three at Stanford as a 2.5-point favorite, close but still good enough to keep them a perfect 8-0 against the spread this season.

The Cougars have an interesting game in Pullman this Saturday against California, which last weekend won an ugly 12-10 slugfest against a Colorado team that spent some time this season in the Top 25.

And yet, outside of a rout of terrible Oregon State, the Bears haven’t scored more than 24 points in a single game since September. They’re going to need a lot more of that against Washington State, which averages 40.8 points per game, best in the Pac-12.

The Cougars are just 10.5-point favorites Saturday, even though Cal clearly lacks the offense to keep up. Take WSU with 888Sport to cover.

  5. Houston

The Cougars broke into the AP Top-25 at No. 17 this week, and with good reason — they’ve been blowing out opponents with regularity. Houston has won three straight outright and four of five against the spread, in the process almost scoring at will.

The Cougars in their last three games have scored 42, 49 and 57 points, the latter coming in a 21-point rout of a once-ranked South Florida team. Quarterback D’Eriq King is slinging it, averaging 300 passing yards per game.

Houston is 13-point favorites this Saturday at SMU, a 3-5 team which features the next-to-last scoring defense in the American — not a good combination for the Mustangs. Take Houston to roll with 888Sport.

  6. Pittsburgh

It’s a mess below Clemson in the ACC, but Pittsburgh is one of those teams trying to bring some clarity to the league’s bloated middle class.

The Panthers have won three straight against the spread, throwing a real scare into Touchdown Jesus — the closest any opponent has come to beating Notre Dame with Ian Book at quarterback — and last week becoming the latest team to dispatch an overrated Duke squad that somehow is favorited every week.

Friday night the Panthers are a 7.5-point underdog at Virginia in a key Coastal Division matchup, but have the kind of rushing game than can keep things close on the road. Take Pitt and the points with SugarHouse.
