5 Hottest College Football Teams You Should Bet This Week

Last weekend’s college football action may still be fresh in the mind, but it’s never too early for college football betting fans to think about building on a few victories or moving past a bad beat. Consider these five hot teams from around the country to get your new wagering week off to a fast start.

  1. Boston College

Remember not long ago when the Eagles were one of the worst programs in all of major-college football? Not anymore. Head coach Steve Addazio has done a fine job of resuscitating a once-proud outfit, and has Boston College at a respectable 4-2.

Last week was a near miss, a 28-23 loss on the road to a North Carolina State team that’s ranked in the AP Top 25.

The Eagles still covered the 6.5-point spread, and are 13.5-point favorites with SugarHouse this week at home to a Louisville squad that was embarrassed by Georgia Tech on Friday night.

It’s hard to imagine Louisville bouncing back so soon from that 66-31 blistering; at the same time, it’s easy to foresee the Eagles continuing their progress against an opponent rapidly establishing itself as the worst team in the ACC. Bet them at SugarHouse.

  2. Iowa State

Break up the Cyclones, who have covered three of the last four weeks as a double-digit underdog, even winning outright this past weekend as a 10-point dog at Oklahoma State.

Iowa State did it without one of its best players, running back David Montgomery — the fourth-leading rusher in the Big 12 — who sat out with what’s being called an arm injury, and whose status is uncertain going forward.

But the Cyclones have a running threat behind center in quarterback David Purdy, and the third-best defense in the conference, and are capable of covering again when high-powered West Virginia comes to Ames this weekend as a 6.5-point favorite.

    Bet them +6.5 at SugarHouse.

  3. Utah State

All Utah State does is win — maybe not on the scoreboard, but definitely against the spread, where the Aggies are a perfect 5-0 this season.

That perfect record runs the gamut, from covering as a 23.5-point underdog at Michigan State, to covering as a 21.5-point favorite against New Mexico State, to winning a pick-’em last weekend against BYU.

This Saturday, bet Utah State as a 24.5-point home favorite against UNLV , which was blown out at home last week by New Mexico.

The Aggies lead the Mountain West’s Mountain Division, lead the conference with a scoring average of 50.2 points per game, and have enough to keep their perfect ATS record intact this weekend against a less-than-mediocre opponent.

  5. Appalachian State

Speaking of perfect ATS teams, meet the Mountaineers, who haven’t only covered but also have gone over the total in all four games (with one weather postponement) they’ve played this season.

That includes the season-opening near-stunner at Penn State, where the Mountaineers took the Nittany Lions into overtime as a 24.5-point underdog.

Appalachian State’s statistical domination of the Sun Belt is mind-boggling — they lead the league in scoring offense and scoring defense, total offense and total defense, and too many other categories to count.

In fairness, the first half of their league schedule hasn’t exactly been the most challenging, and they’ve rolled up 72 and 52 points in their past two games. Arkansas State is a stauncher foe, but the Mountaineers still have enough firepower to cover as an 8.5-point favorite with SugarHouse on the road in a Tuesday night Sun Belt clash.

  6. Iowa

Overshadowed by luminaries Ohio State and Penn State in the Big Ten, Iowa has simply been its usual, steady self. The Hawkeyes have covered against the spread in all but one game this season, that one a home contest against Wisconsin where they allowed a late touchdown and failed to cover as 3-point favorites.

Other than that, they’ve been reliable, and it’s easy to see that ATS success continuing this week at Indiana, where Iowa will play as a 5-point favorite.

The Hoosiers are better, and they actually covered as a 27.5-point underdog last weekend at Ohio State. But Indiana remains a team that struggles to take that big step against the conference’s elite, of which Iowa certainly qualifies.

Combine that with the modest line and Iowa’s ATS success, and it makes for a sensible wager this week. Back the Hawkeyes -3 at Indiana with SugarHouse.
