ACC Basketball Tournament 2019 Odds, Tips & Top Bets to Back

As the ACC convenes on downtown Charlotte for the latest edition of the most historic and longest-running conference tournament in college basketball, one question hangs over the Queen City: Does anyone really trust Virginia in March?

The hesitancy is understandable after last season, when a 31-3 Cavaliers team that was the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament became the first to drop an opening-round game to a No. 16 seed, getting drilled by unheralded UMBC as a 20-point favorite.

The pall from that stunner follows another seemingly great Wahoos team into another March Madness, where Virginia attempts to rebuild its postseason reputation beginning in the same arena where its massive meltdown occurred one year ago.

ACC Conference Tournament 2019 Betting Tips

At 28-2, Virginia is the top seed and defending champion of the ACC Tournament, which promises to feature a much different atmosphere than the one played in Brooklyn a year ago.

But there are qualifiers everywhere: The Hoos lost both games they played this season to Duke (which had Zion Williamson for both contests) and North Carolina is a now far better team than the one the Cavaliers beat in the Dean Dome back on Feb. 11.

And then, well, there’s always that doubt that shadows Virginia this time of year.

With all that in mind, here’s your college basketball betting breakdown of the ACC Tournament, which runs Tuesday through Saturday at Spectrum Center.

Best Bet: North Carolina (+200) with SugarHouse

Despite Virginia’s record, nobody in the league is playing better right now than the Tar Heels, who enter the tournament having won seven straight for 14 out of 15. Against the spread, they’ve been almost as reliable, with covers in 11 of their last 14.

A team that struggled with lineup combinations minus national champion catalysts Joel Berry and Theo Pinson found itself down the stretch behind guard Cameron Johnson and one of the nation’s best 3-point attacks.

No doubt, the Tar Heels are on the far more difficult side of the bracket, eyeing Duke in a potential semifinal, while Virginia (+150) has a much easier path to the title game.

But you’re not in Brooklyn anymore: The crowd in Charlotte will be almost uniformly behind North Carolina, making this tournament neutral-court in name only, and providing another reason why it’s easy to like the Tar Heels to take it all.

Best Bet: Duke (+175) with DraftKings

Wait, don’t the Blue Devils sport better odds than North Carolina? How are they the value bet? Well, because you’re hedging that Zion Williamson will be back in uniform at some point this week, and Duke will once again be transformed into the best team in America.

With Zion, you’re talking the fully-formed Duke team that swept Virginia, that was a -400 shoo-in to reach the Final Four and +175 favorite to win the national title, and that would easily be the favorite to win the ACC this week.

Without Zion? Well, that’s the rub. Then you’re talking the Duke team that’s lost three of six since the Great Swoosh Explosion, that’s looked horrible even in some wins (hello, Wake Forest), and is really trying to find itself without its best player on the floor. Hey, it’s a gamble. But that’s the whole point, isn’t it?

Best Long Shot: Florida State (+2000) with DraftKings

The ACC takes a dip in quality after its Big Three, all of whom could be No. 1 NCAA Tournament regional seeds if fully healthy.

The best of the rest is Florida State, which still has the core of players from last year’s Elite Eight team, has been ranked in the Top 25 all season, and enters the tournament having won 11 of its last 12.

The Seminoles went winless against the Hoos, Heels and Blue Devils, but due to the ACC’s unbalanced divisional schedule played those teams just once each.

Best Flier: Syracuse (+10000) with SugarHouse

The Orange beat Duke in Cameron Indoor Stadium, they played North Carolina close in the Dean Dome, they have a star scorer in guard Tyus Battle and a wacky zone defense that can be tough to adjust to on short notice.

Much worse Jim Boeheim teams have gone further in March.
