Adam Caplan's NFL Daily Fantasy Must Plays for Week 9

Adam Caplan's NFL Daily Fantasy Must Plays for Week 9

Not every matchup will go your way. That’s fantasy football.

For every Adrian Peterson recommendation I’ll make due to a good matchup, there are no-brainers such as David Njoku, who had been on fire by the numbers prior to last week’s great matchup. Peterson put up well over 20 points in most scoring systems, while Njoku got shut out.

I’m certainly not going to shy away from talented players with good matchups, which will be the case again this week.

Week 9 Quarterback Best Bet

Ryan Fitzpatrick = $7,100 at FanDuel

Matchup: Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Carolina Panthers

Those of you who cut the journeyman signal caller from your fantasy teams, it’s time to pick him back up. This recommendation is the only one not by the numbers, but more of the reality of the Buccaneers this season.

They are behind in most games, which has caused them to throw more than they would like. They are averaging about 42 pass attempts per game largely because their defense has struggled all season and their running game has mostly been non-existent.

On the road this week, you can count on Fitzpatrick to put up the ball a lot and the upside is he has six quality passing targets (4 WRs, 2 TEs) to work with.

At times, it may not look pretty, but the numbers will be in there in the end for the 14-year pro this week.

This should be a high-scoring game, and there simply is no fathomable reason why you shouldn't give Dalton a start this week.

Week 9 Running Back Best Bet

Lamar Miller = $6,500 at FanDuel

Matchup: Houston Texans at Denver Broncos

After a very slow start, the eighth-year back has really come on the past two weeks. Miller has put up 233 yards and has rushed for two scores over that time span.

One of the biggest reasons for this high performance in recent games is due to the improved play of his offensive line. And this week, he’ll face one of the NFL’s worst run defenses.

The Broncos defense, which has given up the 11th most fantasy points to running backs this season, has been even worse in recent weeks. Over their last four games, the Broncos are giving up an awful 6.29 yards per carry along with three TDs. And that equates to fifth most fantasy points given up over that timeframe to running backs.

Miller, who put up 100 yards on the ground two weeks ago on the road against a great Jaguar front-seven, should be instore for a lot of work. He carried the ball 40 times over the last two games.

Week 9 Wide Receiver Best Bets

Calvin Ridley = $6,500 at FanDuel

Matchup: Atlanta Falcons at Washington Redskins

Ridley has been one of the beneficiaries of the Falcons going to more of a spread offense after the loss of RB DeVonta Freeman. The first-round pick of the Falcons had a two-week span earlier this season (Weeks 3-4) where he posted five TD receptions and 200 yards receiving.

While the rookie has been relatively quiet lately, he’ll face a Redskins secondary that has been giving up a ton of production to opposing wide receivers.

Over their last four games, the Redskins have given up 60 receptions, 881 yards, and five TD passes. And over that timeframe they gave up a catch rate of over 73%. With all of that taken into consideration, Ridley should rise to the occasion to post really solid numbers for fantasy owner this week.

Devin Funchess = $6,400 at FanDuel

Matchup: Carolina Panthers vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Very quietly, the fifth-year pro is on pace for a career-high in yards and receptions this season. Funchess, in his second season as a full-time starter, tends to win matchups against poor pass defenses.

And he’ll face arguably the worst pass defense in the NFL this week.

Against opposing wide receivers, the Buccaneers defense gives up over 16 receptions, 197 yards, and nearly two TDs per game, which gives them a ranking of 31st. And in their last four games, that same defense is giving up nearly 15 receptions, over 196 yards and two touchdowns per game.

Funchess, who is known as one of the NFL’s biggest receivers at 6-4, 225, should be able to post some of his best numbers to date to such a great matchup.

Week 9 Tight End Best Bet

OJ Howard = $6,000 at FanDuel

Matchup: Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Carolina Panthers

Among those who should benefit from the Buccaneers turning back to Fitzpatrick at quarterback is this second-year tight end.

During the journeyman quarterback’s first three starts this season, Howard posted a total of 222 yards with a whopping 20.2 yards per catch, which is extremely high for a tight end.

Howard will face the Panthers defense this week that is ranked 32nd against opposing tight ends through eight weeks and 31st over the last four. The Panthers gave up 7.5 receptions, 87.25 yards, and .75 touchdowns on average over those last four games.

With the Buccaneers likely to play from behind most of the game due to their issues on defense, Howard figures to get plenty of opportunities to make big plays in this game.

Week 9 Flex Best Bet

Kenyan Drake = $6,900 at FanDuel

Matchup: Miami Dolphins vs. New York Jets

Drake has been somewhat of a “fantasy enigma” this season. While he had tremendous hype coming into his third campaign, Drake was quickly supplanted by veteran RB Frank Gore as the starter.

However, in recent weeks, Dolphins head coach Adam Gase has found very creative ways to get Drake the ball in space.

While he has four games over his last six with six carries or less, Drake has 20 receptions and four total TDs over that timeframe, including three combined TDs over his last two games.

Drake will face a Jets defense that has been struggling of late against opposing running backs. They’ve given up over 5 yards per carry, four total TDs and over 11 yards per reception over their last four games.

So, the versatile Drake figures to do well against the Jets defense on Sunday.
