Australian Open 2019 Women’s Semifinals: Bet The Young Guns

Australian Open 2019 Women’s Semifinals: Bet The Young Guns

The Australian Open 2019 women’s tournament has been a wild one for tennis betting. None of the top 3 seeds still stand, and betting favorite Serena Williams is out in absolutely stunning fashion.

The semifinal is here, and the favorites need to take every point seriously because the favorites are falling left and right. There will be a first time champion crowned when it’s all said and done. Who it’s going to be is the real mystery for those partaking in Australian Open betting.

Karolina Pliskova vs Naomi Osaka

This could be the big chance for Pliskova to finally break through. The 26 year-old Czech has never made the semifinal of the Australian Open before, and she does so in absolutely stunning fashion. Down 5-1 in the third set to Serena Williams, Pliskova won 6 straight games to shock the tournament favorite and world.

She enters the match now the favorite to win the whole tournament, because that’s what beating Serena does. Having only made a single major final (US Open 2016), she’ll have to keep her head and make sure she doesn’t allow herself an emotional letdown after a monster win.

That’s a lot easier said than done, especially facing Japanese star Naomi Osaka. The 21 year-old is looking for her second straight major win, having taken the US Open in 2018. She previously hasn’t advanced past the round 16 at the Australian Open, but her breakout 2018 season helped her build the confidence and seeding to advance further in the 2019 season.

It’s not like Osaka has had an easy path to the semifinal. From third round to quarterfinal, Osaka has faced tournament seeds #28 Su Wei Hsieh, #13 Anastasija Sevastova, and #6 Elina Svitolina. Most impressively is the fact that Osaka handled Svitolina in straight sets, only conceding a single game in the second set.

Odds tend to like Osaka to move on to her second straight final, she’s favored on 888Sport at 7/10 over Pliskova, who’s being offered at 23/20 odds. A bet on either woman wouldn’t go awry, as the spread is -1.5 in favor of Osaka. The bet is likely on Osaka. Pliskova might be able to handle Serena once, but Osaka might as well be Serena minus 16 years. That’ll be just a bit too much for her to handle.

Petra Kvitova vs Danielle Rose Collins

Everyone expected an American to be in the semifinal. What was not expected was for it to be Danielle Rose Collins. Welcome to the big time, the former NCAA #1 didn’t qualify for a single major tournament in 2017, and only played the first round of the French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open in 2018.

Clearly 2019 is a different year, the unseeded Collins holds upset of the tournament (men’s and women’s) by knocking off the world and tournament #2 Angelique Kerber in the round of 16, despite being an 11/2 underdog. Even more stunning is that Collin surrendered only 2 games the entire match.

On the other side of the net: Petra Kvitova. The Czech is back in the semifinal of a major open for the first time since 2014 when she won Wimbledon. Kvitova has only run into a single seeded player so far this tournament, in her quarterfinal match against #15 seed Ashleigh Barty.

It’s been an incredible comeback for Kvitova, who was left with nerve damage in her left hand after a knife attack in 2017. She had a miserable season in Grand Slam tournaments in 2018, but won 5 WTA tournaments between Slams. She now finds herself back in form and in position to win her first major tournament in five years.

Bettors can expect a tighter match than the odds suggest. Kvitova is a heavy favorite on SugarHouse at 11/50 and Collins at 7/2. However, the two have already played once this season at Brisbane. Kvitova won in a 3 hour marathon, but Collins comes into the match off some of the best wins of her career. Your best bet is the spread: Collins is offered at +4.5 for 27/25.
