Big East Basketball Tournament 2019 Odds, Tips & Top Bets

Matchups are extremely important factors for fans of NCAA basketball betting and especially March Madness betting to consider.

With that in mind, it can often be beneficial to bet on the team with the easiest path to a championship rather than the best overall team based on talent or record.

In a conference as sneakily competitive as the Big East was this season, you can bet it’s going to come down to matchups this week at Madison Square Garden. Whether teams will be able to capitalize on good matchups or overcome bad ones is a different story.

Villanova and Marquette practically played hot potato with the top seed over the last few weeks of the regular season.

They’re the only two teams in the Big East to finish with records above .500 in conference play, but since they met on February 9th in Milwaukee they’re a combined 5-7 (excluding their second meeting March 6).

They remain the two basically interchangeable favorites and there are cases to be made for betting either of them in the tourney. They will, however, likely face some bad (or at least rough) matchups along the way.

Betting Villanova 2019 Big East Tourney: +140 with PointsBet

This year’s squad isn’t quite comparable to the powerhouses that went on to win the NCAA Championship in two of the last three years. They finished the season with losses to St. John’s, Georgetown, Xavier and Seton Hall with wins over Marquette and Butler in between.

Despite that, they have the top seed and will have the easier path in the early going with either Providence or Butler in the quarterfinals. Then they'll play either Xavier or Creighton, two of the hottest teams in the conference, for the right to head to the final.

Xavier has won six of its last seven games including a victory over the Wildcats on Feb. 24 while the Bluejays soar into the tournament on a five-game win streak.

While matchups, as previously stated, will be important for most teams in the tourney, Villanova does have an X-factor that the others don't: Jay Wright. The best coaches can pull greatness out of teams that may have underperformed up to this point, and Wright is one of the best.

He's got the savvy and championship pedigree to coach his team past a bad matchup or a hotter opponent, so it would be foolish to overlook Nova's chances of rolling right through Saturday.

Phil Booth is an old school baller who's shown that the big moments don't phase him throughout his career, while forwards like Jermaine Samuels and Eric Paschall highlight a powerful frontcourt and extremely well-balanced group.

Betting Marquette 2019 Big East Tourney: +200 with DraftKings

It’s gut-check time for the Golden Eagles. Four losses in a row to hand Villanova the Big East regular season title was about the worst way to head into Madison Square Garden.

But all of that can be erased with a strong, redemptive showing in the tourney.

The expectations will be for a Marquette-Villanova final, which would mark the first time a 1-seed and 2-seed have met in the Big East Championship Game. To hold up its end of that deal, Marquette will need to get past some teams that have given it big time trouble.

Marquette might be the team that ends up hurting the most from a lackluster finish to the regular season, as they'll now have to potentially beat a St. John's team that they haven't defeated yet this season followed by either Seton Hall or Georgetown who they've also lost to.

If Markus Howard and the Hauser brothers have saved their best for last, Marquette should make it to the title game, but that's a big "if". St. John's is one of the few teams that can stifle Howard (25 points in both meetings combined) while the Hoyas and Pirates have the guard play to go blow-for-blow with the Golden Eagles.

St. John's in particular, assuming it get pasts DePaul Wednesday, will be a serious challenge with veritable homecourt advantage and phenom Shamorie Ponds lighting up the scoreboard.

Two things in Marquette's favor for the quarterfinals are the tried-and-true assertion that "it's extremely difficult to beat a team three times in one season" and the fact that St. John's didn't have the best finish either (1-4 in their last five games).

One thing is for certain: there will be no easy wins for Steve Wojciechowski's squad this week. That could either harden or crush them with Selection Sunday looming.

Betting the Field in the 2019 Big East Tournament

While Villanova and Marquette stand alone at the top, there's loads of intrigue below them. To best illustrate what can be expected over the next four days, look no further than the Georgetown Hoyas.

After the Hoyas knocked off Villanova on Feb. 20 they fell to Creighton, beat DePaul and Seton Hall then got absolutely stomped 101-69 in the rematch with DePaul. Then they turned around and beat Marquette on the road in the season finale for good measure.

Quite literally anything can happen with level of parity that's been on display all season and particularly in the last month. That's what's going to make this year's Big East Tourney such a blast for viewers and probably hell for bettors.

But if you're looking at a team that has no shortage of talent with a fairly favorable path that's not named Marquette or Villanova, the Hoyas have great value at +1400 with PointsBet.

It's going to be really interesting to see how freshmen guards Mac McClung and James Akinjo respond to the bright lights of the world's most famous arena. If they thrive and lead Georgetown on a run, watch out; not just during the tournament but for the next few years as well.
