Emmy Awards 2018 Betting Tips and Odds

Quick Tips:

  • The Americans to win Outstanding Drama Series - 16/1 at Betway
  • Donald Glover to win Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy - 2/7 at Betway
  • Matthew Rhys to win Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama - 2/1 at Betway

The Primetime Emmy Awards, occurring every September, are a celebration of quality television programming across the globe. The ceremony, closely followed by TV fanatics, provides a platform upon which celebrities are recognised for their work in the preceding year. Awards ceremony betting is as popular as ever, and the 2018 edition of the Emmys, hosted by Colin Jost and Michael Che of Saturday Night Live, will be a hot topic at top online specials bookmakers.

It’s not easy to discern how this year’s winners will fall. Unlike the Oscars, which honours film, the Emmys often has repeat winners due to the cyclical, season-based nature of TV shows. Some shows that were once Emmy staples like Modern Family have been swept aside to allow for a new class to enter, but there are some old favourites, like Game of Thrones, re-entering the market.

It’s often been said that the easiest way to win an Emmy is to have an Emmy, but will that sentiment ring true in 2018?

The Categories

Let’s take a look at the Emmys betting odds for each respective major category, provided by Betway.

Outstanding Comedy Series:

  • Atlanta - 4/7
  • The Marvelous Mrs Maisel - 5/4
  • Barry - 14/1
  • GLOW - 33/1
  • Black-ish - 33/1
  • Curb Your Enthusiasm - 33/1
  • Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt - 33/1
  • Silicon Valley - 50/1

Our Tip: It’s hard to see Atlanta not taking home the Emmy for Best Comedy. Season Two of Donald Glover’s hit show was excellent, and other TV comedies in 2018 paled in comparison. The exclusion of Veep and Modern Family this year will definitely help Atlanta’s chances and although short, the 4/7 listed at Betway for Atlanta to take home the bacon could prove profitable at higher stakes.

Outstanding Drama Series:

  • The Handmaid’s Tale - 1/4
  • Game of Thrones - 7/2
  • The Americans - 16/1
  • The Crown - 20/1
  • This Is Us - 25/1
  • Stranger Things - 33/1
  • Westworld - 33/1

Our Tip: The Americans, the much-loved period spy thriller, could be considered a testament to the bizarre way in which awards shows work. Critics and fans alike have shown the programme a lot of love since it’s 2013 inception, yet 2018 is only the second time it’s been nominated for an Emmy.

It’s always difficult to rule out Game of Thrones in this category, but the fantasy-drama had a slightly weaker season 7. The Handmaid’s Tale is still the likely winner here, but, we think there’s serious value to be found in a bet on The Americans to win this category at 16/1 with Betway. If there is going to be a surprise in the 2018 Emmys this could be it.

Outstanding Limited Series:

  • The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story - 1/6
  • Godless - 5/1
  • Patrick Melrose - 14/1
  • Genius: Picasso - 16/1
  • The Alienist - 20/1

Our Tip: Ryan Murphy has done well with his limited series so far. While many will argue that The Assassination of Gianni Versace was nowhere near as captivating as The People vs. OJ, it’s still difficult to look past a win in this category for the American Horror Story co-creator.

It’s impossible to argue against the series and the bookies run parallel with us on this, offering 1/6. For betting interest consider Patrick Melrose at 14/1. Benedict Cumberbatch’s latest TV project received rave reviews when it started but it may be a little late to the party for this year’s proceedings. Playing it safe? Stick with the favourite.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series:

  • Donald Glover (Atlanta) - 2/7
  • Bill Hader (Barry) - 11/4
  • Ted Danson (The Good Place) - 14/1
  • Anthony Anderson (Black-ish) - 33/1
  • Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm) - 33/1
  • William H Macy (Shameless) - 33/1

Our Tip: We like Donald Glover to retain his title in this category. Bill Hader has done some excellent work in Barry and while HBO does have some pull power it’s difficult to see Atlanta’s front man not winning again. We could consider Ted Danson as an outside bet at 14/1 for his work alongside Kristen Bell in dark comedy ‘The Good Place’, but it’s a very unlikely wager to come through. Back Glover instead.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series:

  • Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs Maisel) - 1/14
  • Tracee Ellis (Black-ish) - 13/2
  • Allison Janney (Mom) - 16/1
  • Pamela Adlon (Better Things) - 33/1
  • Issa Rae (Insecure) - 50/1
  • Lily Tomlin (Grace & Frankie) - 50/1

Our Tip: This group is perhaps the most exciting betting wise for the Emmys. There are many potential winners here and no undeserving nominations. If we had to narrow it down, our pick would be Pamela Adlon, who’s currently listed at 33/1.

She not only acted in Better Things - she was director, showrunner and co-writer. These are all factors that definitely won’t hurt her chances. Allison Janney is also looking like a bit of a shoe in - she’s won seven Emmys before, so 16/1 at Betway for her to win looks a solid bet.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series:

  • Sterling K. Brown (This is Us) - 8/13
  • Matthew Rhys (The Americans) - 2/1
  • Jeffrey Wright (Westworld) - 8/1
  • Milo Ventimiglia (This is Us) - 9/1
  • Ed Harris (Westworld) - 25/1
  • Jason Bateman (Ozark) - 25/1

Our Tip: Kevin Spacey has often taken up a slot on this list, but due to sexual misconduct and abuse allegations that surfaced this year, the field has opened up a bit. Everybody seems to love the reigning champion of this category Sterling K. Brown but he wasn’t featured as much on This Is Us this year.

We like Matthew Rhys at 2/1 for his part in The Americans. He’s been amazing throughout and performed leagues above the rest in this category.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series:

  • Elizabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale) - 1/5
  • Sandra Oh (Killing Eve) - 7/1
  • Claire Foy (The Crown) - 8/1
  • Keri Russell (The Americans) - 9/1
  • Evan Rachel Woods (Westworld) - 33/1
  • Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) - 40/1

Our Tip: Without a doubt, Elizabeth Moss delivered a sublime performance in The Handmaid's Tale this year. It’s easy to see why she’s the favourite at the bookies, and we can’t see there being many surprises here. For betting interest, consider Keri Russell at 9/1, but you’ll likely want to stick with the favourite.

The Verdict:

We’re not sure if the bookies predictions this year are entirely reflective of how things will pan out on Emmys night. There are some excellent betting opportunities on the table for Monday’s show, and, as with all awards show, we should expect some surprises. The Americans to win Best Drama at 16/1 looks a quality wager, as does Pamela Adlon for Best Actress at 33/1. To keep things interesting couple these with a wager on Atlanta for Best Comedy and Donald Glover for Best Actor.

The Emmys may have become more of a popularity contest in recent years but the show is still wildly entertaining, providing a solid dose of glitz and glam to tide viewers over until Oscars season. So, consider a wager at Betway to consolidate a fantastic evening of TV and start planning your acceptance speech now.
