Five Hot College Football Teams to Consider Betting: Week 7

This past weekend was one of upheaval in college football, with playoff hopefuls Georgia and West Virginia suffering losses, and Penn State, Wisconsin and Washington all effectively knocked out of the national championship conversation with a second defeat on the season. But each Monday means turning the page to new games and new college football betting opportunities, and here are five hot teams to consider this week.

  1. Virginia

The long-dormant Cavaliers made some noise last week with a home upset of nationally-ranked Miami, winning as a seven-point underdog and covering for the fifth time in six games this season. Middle class in the ACC is a murky and unpredictable place to be — it feels like Clemson, N.C. State, and everyone else — but Virginia has found some consistency behind a solid if anonymous defense and a capable rushing threat in Jordan Ellis.

This weekend the Wahoos travel to Duke, which is 5-1 against an extremely weak schedule. The Blue Devils have lost to the best team they’ve played — at home to Virginia Tech as a 6.5-point favorite — and failed to cover two of their last three. And yet Duke remains an 8-point favorite this weekend, too many points to give the Cavaliers in Durham.Take Virginia to cover +8 at SugarHouse .

  2. Temple

Break up the Owls, who have won five straight games against the spread, most recently at Navy this past weekend as a 6.5-point favorite. Overall, Temple has won four of five games behind a defense that’s especially effective against the pass. The Owls play this weekend as 3.5-point favorites at unbeaten Cincinnati, which has clawed its way into the AP Top 25 despite playing a ridiculously easy schedule to this point. (Seriously, you move up five spots in the poll after beating 2-4 Tulane?)

This is another one of those games where the line is more indicative of where these teams stand than the records, and it’s easy to like the Owls to cover -3.5 on the road at Sugarhouse .

  3. Fresno State

It’s been a while since the Bulldogs were relevant on the national scene, but Jeff Tedford’s team is 5-1 and has covered in five of six games this season, including each of their last four. In the process, the Bulldogs have covered some healthy numbers — as a 10.5-point favorite against Toledo, as a 16.5-point favorite at Nevada, and as an 18-point home favorite last weekend against Wyoming.

Tedford may have built his name as a quarterback mentor at Cal, but at Fresno State he’s doing it with the best defense in the Mountain West, one allowing opponents an average of just over 13 points and 300 yards per game. The Bulldogs look to keep it going Saturday, where Fresno State is 14.5-point favorite at a New Mexico team that’s lost two of three against the spread.

Take Fresno State to cover the -14.5 point spread on SugarHouse .

  4. Washington State

Mike Leach’s high-flying Cougars have it rolling at 5-1, covering in every game this year, and going over the over/under total in each of their last five. The Cougars haven’t exactly played the toughest schedule, but they have a good victory at Utah as a 1.5-point underdog, and quarterback Gardner Minshew is averaging 403 passing yards per game — 116 more than anyone else behind center in the Pac 12.

The Cougars are a 1.5-point home underdog this week against Oregon in a battle of the league’s two highest-scoring offenses. The Ducks enter on the heels of an overtime victory over Washington, while Washington State is perfect so far on the Palouse. Take the Coogs to cover the thin +1.5 spread at home .

  5. USC

Remember the Trojans, the one-time standard-bearers in the Pac 12? After a rough start, they seem to be taking some strides in the right direction, the most recent step a victory over previously-unbeaten Colorado last weekend at the L.A. Coliseum. USC heads to Utah this weekend for a key South Division matchup having won three in a row and covered two straight. Utah is sneaky-good, built around a stubborn defense, and hard to beat in Salt Lake City.

This middling Trojans offense won’t remind anyone of the salad days with Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush — freshman quarterback J.T. Daniels is dealing with some serious growing pains — but USC remains capable, and the line setting the Utes as a 6.5-point favorite seems too large. Take advantage of it and bet the Trojans to cover at SugarHouse .
