NASCAR Betting Tips: 5 Drivers to Watch at Talladega

NASCAR Betting Tips: 5 Drivers to Watch at Talladega

There may not be a more unpredictable track on the NASCAR circuit than Talladega Superspeedway. The mammoth 2.66-mile Alabama track is known for high speeds, big crashes and surprise winners that makes it both a favorite for some yet despised by others.

The reason for the parity that plays out at Talladega over some of the other tracks on the schedule is the restrictor plate, a mechanism that chokes down horsepower in order to suppress speeds that would easily reach beyond the 230 mph mark if left unchecked.

It’s a device that was implemented in the name of safety back in the mid-1980s, when a car nearly flew up into the air and into the grandstands. The plate has been a staple since.

However winning and running well at Talladega is not as random as some would believe.

While the track has produced its share of one-hit-wonder winners such as Richard Brickhouse, Bobby Hillin Jr. and Ron Bouchard over the years, other drivers and teams have excelled on a regular basis. There is a skill set and a talent needed to win at the notorious track.

The Cup Series Playoffs also roll on this week with Sunday’s race the second in Round 2. There are a number of drivers trying to hang on to their spot on the grid to advance while others know their only chance of surviving and moving on is by winning.

Those conflicting strategies should turn Sunday’s race into a bit of a chess match with differing approaches throughout the field.

Here are five drivers worthy of consideration for fans of NASCAR betting to bet in Sunday’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race.

  1. Joey Logano

The Team Penske driver won at Talladega back in the spring, which until now has been his only victory of 2018. Logano is a member of the Team Penske organization that has dominated Talladega in recent years.

Logano himself has won three times at the track in the last six races and has finished in the top 10 in 19 career starts at the track. In order to succeed at Talladega you need teammates to draft with, and Logano has two of the best in Brad Keselowski and Ryan Blaney as well.

Bet Logano to win at +700 with 888Sport.

  2. Brad Keselowski

Speaking of Logano’s crew chief, Keselowski has been an absolute beast at Talladega with five career wins in his 19 starts. He’s also led a series-high 195 laps in the last five races at the track and has four top-10 finishes in the last six Talladega races with a pair of trips to Victory Lane in that mix.

While he’s somewhat secure in the playoff standings, Keselowski has a history of ramping up his performance in the postseason with dramatic wins.

  3. Kevin Harvick

Last week at Dover was a rare stumble for Harvick. He dominated the race, leading 286 laps, and looked well on his way to what would have been an eighth win of the season until a tire issue during a late pit stop knocked him from the lead to an eventual sixth-place finish.

Now there is nothing remotely similar between Dover and Talladega. However Harvick has been known in his career to have a little extra incentive the week following such a disappointment, and he’s also not bad at Talladega by any means.

He is a former winner and has a career 15 top-10 finishes to his credit. Harvick – like Logano and Keselowski – also drives a Ford, the manufacturer that has been the dominant force at Talladega to the tune of six straight wins.

  4. Chase Elliott

He scored career Cup win No. 2 at Dover last week, and the victory advanced Elliott to the next round of the playoffs. So he’s literally playing with house money and has no other strategy to execute Sunday except trying to win for a third time in 2018.

Although his overall finishes don’t tell the entire story, Elliott is considered one of the sport’s best restrictor plate racers and does have a third and fifth on his resume at Talladega.

  5. Ricky Stenhouse Jr.

He’s not having a great season and missed the playoffs, but Stenhouse Jr. has made the upper echelon of restrictor plate drivers.

He won at Talladega and Daytona last year, and although he’s struggled at both tracks in 2018, do not overlook the Roush Fenway Racing driver this week.

He, too, pilots a potent Ford, and in the last 10 Talladega races held, Stenhouse has the best average finish of the entire series at 11.2. Throw out his 26th in the spring visit to the track and Stenhouse has a win and a pair of fifth-place performances to his credit.

Bet Stenhouse to win at +1400 with SugarHouse.
