NASCAR Talladega Geico 500 Odds, Tips and 6 Drivers to Bet

After a rare off week for the Easter holiday, NASCAR roars back into action Sunday with a visit to Talladega Superspeedway for the Geico 500. The mammoth 2.66-mile tri-oval is the largest oval track on the schedule and provides a unique style of racing not seen anywhere else on the circuit.

Talladega and its sister track Daytona create high speeds due to their length and degree of banking in the turns.

Since 1986, NASCAR has implemented a rules package designed to keep speeds in as safe an area – generally around the 200 mph mark – as possible as a means to keep them from becoming airborne after a spin or contact with other cars on track.

The result creates huge packs of racing in the draft with two and three-wide racing the norm throughout the afternoon until a mad scramble to the checkered flag. For those who enjoy NASCAR betting, here are six drivers to consider backing in Sunday’s Geico 500.

  1. Brad Keselowski (+750)

A two-time winner in 2019, Keselowski has won three times at Talladega in his last nine starts. While his two finishes last year were 33rd and 27th, Keselowski was running strong in both outings before getting swept up in an accident. Bet him to win at +750 and +200 to finish 1st-3rd with 888Sport in New Jersey.

  2. Joey Logano (+650)

One of the strongest superspeedway drivers in NASCAR today, Logano has three Talladega victories to his credit over the last seven races at the Alabama track. The Team Penske driver has a string of three straight top-five runs coming into Sunday’s race. Bet Logano to win at +650 and +160 to finish 1st-3rd with SugarHouse in New Jersey.

  3. Kevin Harvick (+1000)

Still winless in 2019 but always a threat at Talladega. Harvick and his Stewart-Haas Racing teammates dominated last fall’s Talladega race and the group will most certainly draft together again on Sunday.

When it comes time to run for the checkered flag, Harvick is historically in the mix and was fourth his last time out. Bet him to win at +1000 and +250 to finish 1st-3rd with SugarHouse.

  4. Denny Hamlin (+900)

Hamlin started the year by winning the Daytona 500 at Talladega’s sister track, which produces a similar kind of pack racing and drafting. While rules changes to the cars are somewhat different than what was in play at Daytona, the principle remains the same and Hamlin possesses the talent to succeed.

He has the third best average finish among active drivers over the last 10 Talladega races at 13.4. Bet him to win at +900 and +225 to finish 1st-3rd with 888Sport.

  5. Kyle Busch (+1000)

The numbers don’t leap off the page for Busch when Talladega rolls around, but he’s been a victim of a great deal of bad luck over the years.

He finished second and third in 2015 and 2016, and with the way his season is going this year, Busch is a threat to win every week. Bet him to win at +1000 and +250 to finish 1st-3d with 888Sport. Bet Busch to win at +1000 and +250 to finish 1st-3rd with SugarHouse.

  6. Kurt Busch (+2500)

The elder Busch brother has been the best Chevrolet driver this season and is sixth in the standings coming to Talladega. He’ll be making his first start at Talladega for Chip Ganassi Racing on Sunday but carries a strong record into the weekend.

Busch is second on the list of average finishes over the last 10 Talladega races at 12.1 and finished second in this event a year ago. Bet him to win at +2500 and +600 to finish 1st-3rd with PointsBet in New Jersey.

  7. 2019 Geico 500 Betting Tip

The school of thought from many whenever Talladega rolls around on the schedule is the style of racing is fertile ground for upset winners. While it’s true the track has produced a number of first-time trips to Victory Lane, more recent history is filled with success from those who have mastered the skill set needed to perform well.

Using the draft, running with teammates and a car capable of generating the horsepower needed to make a move when needed are imperative. All of that adds up to why Ford drivers have dominated at Talladega since 2015.

Drivers behind the wheel of a Ford have won seven straight races at the track with Team Penske running mates Logano and Keselowski combing for five of those victories.

Unlike other tracks on the schedule, qualifying doesn’t carry as much importance at Talladega. Starting upfront isn’t imperative to finishing there because of the draft and drivers’ ability to work their way through the pack. In fact, nine times in Talladega’s history have race winners started 20th or further back.
