Despite that, there are two quarterbacks for one spot. Athan Kallakmanis may get the nod here based on his last game. Tanner Morgan has been out since early November due to a shoulder injury.

Mohammed Ibrahim merited some consideration for the Heisman Trophy. The Senior running back racked up nearly 1,600 rushing yards and scored 19 touchdowns. The Golden Gophers do average 208 rushing yards a contest. Minnesota scores well, yet they rank just 4th out of 131 teams in scoring defense, allowing a mere 13.3 points a contest.

Can Minnesota continue to play some balanced football? The Freshman quarterback makes his share of mistakes, but Kallakmanis does throw the ball better downfield. Daniel Jackson leads Minnesota in receiving yards with 484 and also showed a little extra speed. Minnesota’s receiving corps possesses better talent than given credit for. If Ibrahim stretches out the Syracuse “Front Seven,” the young signal-caller might find some big plays in the passing game. 

Braelen Oliver and safety Michael Dixon entered the protocol, but Minnesota’s depth is rather extensive. Most teams cannot say the same.

If the defense continues to play well, the Under will be in play. Weather conditions may be rainy and milder than Minnesota normally sees. That could play somewhat into Minnesota’s hand here. Syracuse’s offense is one the Golden Gophers may not feel threatened by.

Now, Syracuse figures to miss a significant amount of starters for the game next week. Considering how the regular season ended, that felt inevitable. Duce Chestnut and Ja’Had Carter left the program into the transfer portal. The offensive and defensive coordinators left for other jobs. Furthermore, 1,000+ yard rusher Sean Tucker opted out for the NFL Draft. That’s a lot of loss.

Players can focus on football solely this time of year, but maybe that is not such a good thing here. Syracuse enjoyed such a promising start and then everything fell apart after that close loss to Clemson. The Orange saw so many chances to win that game. After that defeat, Syracuse dropped four of their five remaining games. Only a win against Boston College stemmed the tide a bit.

Unfortunately, the running game is nowhere near the same without Tucker. The offensive line took its fair share of lumps. The defense could not control the line of scrimmage often enough during the second half of the season. Garrett Shrader is a nice enough two-way threat, but that may not be enough. That is even with Oronde Gadsen II. The receiver piled up nearly 900 yards, yet only six touchdowns. 

Syracuse expects to struggle at times offensively in this tilt. Again, tread carefully with the Orange.
