Preakness Stakes Tips & Betting Analysis: 5 Horses to Watch

Obviously, the norm here at the Preakness Stakes is having the Kentucky Derby winner looking to continue its Triple Crown dream. Nothing has been normal about this Triple Crown, as you’ve probably heard.

But because there is no Country House or even Maximum Security running in the Preakness Stakes, it makes it a great betting race for fans of horse racing betting.

  2. Bourbon War: 12/1
  3. Warrior’s Charge: 12/1
  4. Improbable: 5/2

  6. Market King: 30/1
  7. Alwaysmining: 8/1
  8. Signalman: 30/1
  9. Bodexpress: 50/1
  10. Everfast: 20/1

Should Improbable Be the Favorite?

This has more to do with trainer Bob Baffert than the horse. Improbable has not lived up to the lofty expectations that were put upon him following his 2-year-old season. I do not see a legitimate excuse as to why he ran a fifth-place finish, ultimately placed fourth via disqualification, in the Kentucky Derby.

I’m not suggesting that you leave him off your exotic tickets, just don’t build your day around Improbable by singling or making a large win wager. He will be a short price because he is trained by Baffert and ridden by Mike Smith, not because of his recent results.

Maryland’s Alwaysmining Has a Shot to Win

The last Maryland-bredhorse to win Maryland’s signature race was Deputed Testimony in 1983. Just about every year there is a local horse that preps in Maryland stakes races for the Preakness, gets local support and runs poorly. That changes this year with Alwaysmining.

This horse has won six consecutive races and in his most recent win he did so by 11 lengths. He continues to get better as his speed figures show. I had a chance to watch him train at the training facility out in Fair Hill, Maryland and he impressed me as much as a horse can.

I really like this horse and hopefully the price is good come post time given the local support he will receive. A strong win bet or Win, Place, Show wager is strongly suggested.

War of Will: The Champion of the Kentucky Derby

Yes, I know he did not win the Derby, but he did save the day but somehow not falling after the contact he received from Maximum Security. He was way too aggressive early in that race, and for him to still be in a spot to make a serious run at the quarter pole was impressive.

If War of Will can settle, something he has done beautifully in his wins, he has a big chance to pick off the Preakness Stakes. Post position No. 1 is not ideal because he’s likely going to have to go early to avoid getting shuffled back. But if he settles early into a good position, watch out late with WOW.

Introducing: Owendale

You have probably never heard of Owendale, but make sure you familiarize yourself with him. He finally figured it all out in his most recent race. He’s a big horse that should attempt to do the same thing he did in his win at Keeneland on April 13, lay back and make a big run.

He should not try and mix it up with the early speed in this race.

If things go to fast early for others, it will only benefit Owendale and his chances at a win.

Anothertwistafate Not to Be Overlooked

He had a less than ideal trip when he was defeated by Owendale at Keeneland in his last race. This guy has a lot of talent and has been shipped around a lot and none of it seems to bother him. He’s going to have to lose ground from Post 12 given his early running style.

His rider Jose Ortiz is as good as it gets though on judging pace, and I will not be shocked if he makes a move down the backstretch to attempt to take this race over. Make sure he’s an include in your exotics at the very least.

Cheers to a great Preakness, and enjoy this wagering opportunity and take advantage of it. Also ,the undercard races are as good as I have seen in years during Preakness weekend. Watch out for Admission Office at a big price in the Dixie Stakes.
