  • Bet OVER 58 points to be scored with SugarHouse.

Ohio State and Washington are programs that in the eyes of their respective fan bases have endured somewhat disappointing seasons, given that both opened with top-six national rankings and goals of making the College Football Playoff.

Neither got that far — but both had a hand in shaping the playoff, with convincing routs of rivals Washington State and Michigan, respectively, that sent tremors throughout the national scene. Their meeting in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1 presents a clash of two teams who closed the regular season by playing some of their best football of the year, showing flashes of why so many thought they could contend for the national crown.

The Rose Bowl is the first meeting between Ohio State and Washington in over a decade, and — stunningly — their first in Pasadena. The Buckeyes are a 7-point favorite, and the over/under is 58 which should interest some fans of college football betting.

As NCAA bowl betting season kicks into high gear, let's look at one of the most anticipated New Years Six matchups.

2019 Rose Bowl Betting Odds

Buckeyes Against the Spread

In the middle of the season, there were few bets against the spread worse than Ohio State. With a one-dimensional offense, the Buckeyes lurched through a series of unconvincing victories and were hammered at mediocre Purdue. They lost five straight against the spread, with most of those defeats coming against lesser lights like Indiana, Nebraska and Minnesota.

And yet, the Buckeyes head to Pasadena having covered two in a row in impressive style, with quarterback Dwayne Haskins looking completely in command. But are those the real Buckeyes, or the team that had failed to cover seven of their first 11? With Urban Meyer set to step down, playoff hopes dashed and Ohio State taking an us-against-the-world mentality, you wonder if the pressure is finally off.

Buckeyes Over/Under

Ohio State’s over/under performances have been more predictable, with the Buckeyes going over the total in each of their last three, and in seven of 13 games this season. The Buckeyes have exceeded an over/under total greater than 58 (the number for the Rose Bowl) six times. The highest over total they’ve cracked this season is 65.5, but that had less to do with the Buckeyes than with their inability to stop Purdue from rolling up 49 points.

Huskies Against the Spread

Washington had a notable cover skid of its own, losing six straight against the spread at one point, and going just 4-9 ATS overall. Their 12-10 loss at Cal as a 12-point favorite is almost as bad the egg Ohio State laid in West Lafayette. The Huskies have been an underdog two previous times this season, falling as a 1-point dog to Auburn in their opener, and winning as a 3-point dog at Washington State.

Huskies Over/Under

An over/under of 58 seems steep for a Washington team that’s struggled offensively at times, despite the presence of a standout quarterback in Jake Browning and a fantastic all-purpose back in Myles Gaskin. Only twice this season have the Huskies faced an over/under as large, and they didn’t exceed the total either time. With the best defense in the Pac-12, Washington can sometimes be content in grinding out low-scoring victories, like their 10-3 snoozer over Utah in the Pac-12 title game.

But Ohio State isn’t Utah, and will pressure Washington’s offense to open things up. Aside from hanging 42 on awful Oregon State, the most the Huskies have scored in a game this season against a Power 5 opponent is 31. They’ve finished under the total 10 times, going over three — against FCS North Dakota, Oregon State, and Stanford in a game where the number was 44.

Best 2019 Rose Bowl Bets

Ohio State -7 over Washington

A touchdown spread is enough to make you think, given that Gaskin is a game-changing talent, and how impressive the Huskies were on the Palouse. But while Washington has the best defense in the Pac-12, Michigan had the best defense in the nation, and we all know what happened. The Buckeyes have a point to prove, a coach to send off on a high note, and they very recently drilled a playoff-caliber opponent better than the one they’ll face in Pasadena. Take the Buckeyes to cover the spread.

Over 58 Points to be Scored

Washington won’t be able to play it conservative and rely on their defense this time. The Buckeyes have shaken their midseason offensive malaise and scored 45 or more in each of their past three games. The over/under in the Rose Bowl is a number Ohio State has eclipsed with regularity. It’s hard to see the Buckeyes letting Washington control tempo, and winning in a low-scoring slog. Bet the over at 58 points.
