The Texas Bowl is a college football bowl game that returns to late December. This year’s Texas Bowl will play out on Dec. 28 in Houston. Announced on Dec. 4, the 2022 Texas Bowl will feature the Texas Tech Red Raiders (7–5) and Ole Miss Rebels (8–4).

This game features another Big 12 vs SEC matchup. That has been the case since 2014. Kansas State pummeled LSU last year. Can Ole Miss get some SEC revenge or will the Red Raiders prevail?

Texas Bowl 2022 Teams and News

The Texas Bowl replace the Houston Bowl, which ran from 2000 to 2005. 

Since 2016, the Texas Bowl has the fifth-highest attendance among all college football bowls, trailing only the Rose, Peach, Fiesta and Orange bowls.

Joey McGuire coaches a Texas Tech team that went 5-4 in the Big-12 and 7-5 overall. The Red Raiders did not lose anyone of significance for the bowl game yet. However, there are three quarterbacks for one spot. Donovan Smith may still move as he has not started since late October.

Tyler Slough has taken the job for better or for worse. Slough possesses a big-time arm that could put some fear in the Ole Miss defense. The Red Raiders do average 307 passing yards a contest. Texas Tech can score, but they rank just 97th out of 131 teams in scoring defense allowing 29.5 points a contest.

Can the Texas Tech defense hold their own against one of the better offensive lines in college football? Ole Miss is capable of controlling the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. The Red Raiders got gouged by teams like Oklahoma, Baylor, and others because they got manhandled at the point of attack.

If Tahj Brooks and SaRodorick Thompson can help keep Ole Miss off the field, that will give the Red Raiders a chance in the Texas Bowl. If not, Texas Tech could be in trouble. Ole Miss expects to attack relentlessly and is healthy for the first time in more than a month.

The lack of opt-outs has to be encouraging for Ole Miss. Considering how the regular season ended, the Rebels want to finish off this 2022 campaign with a bang. Anytime a team loses three straight contest like Ole Miss, there lies some serious soul searching. Despite that, Jaxson Dart and the Rebels appear genuinely excited about playing Texas Tech.

Players can focus on football solely with school on winter break. Despite losing four of the five final contests, Ole Miss still ranks highly in some basic metrics. Their balanced offense ranks 28th in the nation averaging 34.2 points per game while their defense comes in 50th yielding 24.2 points per contest.

Ole Miss and their rushing attack will cause some fits. They average 261.6 yards per game on the ground along with almost 230 yards passing. Dart, coached by Lane Kiffin, runs quite the proficient offense. When it comes to bowl games, the Rebels rush defense is a bit troubling. Even that is misleading. Ole Miss allows 161 yards rushing a game but only 4.1 per carry. A fresh start might be perfect for Ole Miss here.
