The next generation of American soccer has officially arrived.

Facing an elimination game against Iran, the U.S. trotted out a starting XI with an average age of just 24 years and 321 days – the youngest lineup at this World Cup and the fourth youngest in the U.S.’ World Cup history.

And on Tuesday, this young U.S. core established themselves in American soccer lore, recording a dramatic 1-0 victory to set up a Round of 16 matchup with the Netherlands on Saturday.

It was the U.S.’ best and most recognized player, Christian Pulisic, sending his team to the next round. Pulisic found Sergio Dest’s header and directed it past Iran goalkeeper Allireza Beiranvand in the 38th minute for the only goal of the contest.

But Pulisic’s full-bore effort for the goal came at a cost. He collided with Beiranvand after he connected with Dest’s header and remained down on the ground receiving medical attention for several minutes. Pulisic was subbed off in the second half but posted a photo online saying he will be ready for Saturday against the Netherlands.

Defense Keys U.S.

The offensive attack has left something to be desired at times for the U.S., but there has been no doubting its defense. The shutouts of Iran and England are just the second time the U.S. has tallied two clean sheets at the World Cup. The last time the U.S. did that came in the first World Cup back in 1930 when the U.S. blanked Belgium and Paraguay in 3-0 victories.

Wales was the only team to score against the Americans, but that came on a penalty kick following an overaggressive challenge from the U.S.’ Walker Zimmerman. However, it was also Zimmerman who saved the lead against Iran.

In the 98th minute, a late chance snuck by U.S. goalkeeper Matt Turner’s legs deep inside the penalty area. Zimmerman came in and was able to clear the ball out of danger to secure the victory.

U.S. Soccer Odds

At FanDuel Sportsbook the U.S. opened the World Cup at +15000 to win the tournament. That number jumped to +25000 after the tie with Wales but went back to +15000 following a draw with England.

After advancing to the Round of 16, the U.S. is now +9000 to win its first World Cup.

The U.S. will be a sizable underdog against the Netherlands. FanDuel has the U.S. at +194 to advance and +350 on the moneyline for the 90-minute result. Netherlands is –245 to advance and –110 on the 90-minute moneyline.

The winner between the U.S. and the Netherlands will face whoever advances between Australia and the winner of Group C, which could be Argentina, Poland or Saudi Arabia.
