Hull City Next Permanent Manager: Tim Walter Remains The Favourite

Hull City sacked Liam Rosenior three days after the end of the Championship season and the best betting sites have drawn up a list of possible contenders to replace him.

The former Tigers defender was harshly dismissed after his team narrowly missed out on the Championship play-offs by three points as Hull ended the season seventh in the standings after suffering a 1-0 defeat by Plymouth Argyle on the final day.

It was a disappointing conclusion to the campaign, but few had tipped Hull for the top six before the season got under way.

So, who will be the next man in the home dugout at the MKM Stadium? Let’s take a look at what the betting apps make of the situation.

Walter The Favourite For Tigers Job

Tim Walter is the early favourite to be the next Hull City manager, with football betting sites offering odds of 2/1

The former Hamburg head coach has been linked with the Championship side since Rosenior was relieved of his duties, with the Daily Telegraph describing Walter as a 'strong contender' for the vacant position.

Rosenior paid the price for not playing the attractive football wanted by his owner Acun Ilicali, who has made it clear in the past that he would rather see his side lose 4-3 than draw 0-0.

Walter was sacked by Hamburg in February, yet prior to that, he led the historic German club to the promotion/relegation play-offs on two occasions. The 39-year-old also led Hamburg to a DFB-Pokal semi-final in 2022.

Ilicali said in a recent radio interview, he hoped to have the appointment made within seven to 10 days.

Interest In Will Still Cools

Will Still is next on the list at 4/1. The Belgium-born Englishman recently left his role at French side Reims, who missed out on a top-half finish in Ligue 1.

Still has made no secret of his desire to test himself in England, but Sunderland are also reported to be keen, while further interest could emerge in the coming weeks.

During his time at Reims, Still had a win percentage of 38.5% in his 65 games in charge at the Stade Auguste-Delaune.

Mason And Neil Could Come Under Consideration

Ryan Mason ended his playing career with Hull City after he was forced to retire following a fractured skull in 2017.

The former midfielder, who twice served as Tottenham's interim manager, has always spoken well of the club’s support during that difficult period, and he may feel he has unfinished business in east Yorkshire.

The 32-year-old may have to drop into the Championship for his first job, though, and he can be backed at 10/1 to join Hull.

Alex Neil has plenty of experience in the second tier of English football, although it is fair to say that his most recent stint with Stoke City did not end well.

Neil knows the division inside out and he has enjoyed his fair share of success too, most notably with Norwich City. The Scot is available at 12/1 as he weighs up his next move.

Could Rae Or Heckingbottom Land The Role?

Alex Rae and Paul Heckingbottom are also 12/1 contenders on new betting sites for the Hull City job.

Heckingbottom was sacked as Sheffield United manager earlier in the campaign, but he was not to blame for the club’s poor start in the Premier League.

Heckingbottom deserves credit for getting the Blades promoted and it would not be a surprise to see him linked with numerous Championship jobs. Hull are unlikely to be the only interested party.

Rae is currently employed by Rangers as a first-team coach under Philippe Clement. He has never managed in England and his last frontline role north of the border ended in 2016 with his sacking by St Mirren.

Barry, Cook And Pearson Among The Outsiders

Anthony Barry (14/1), Paul Cook and Nigel Pearson (both 16/1) are seen as outsiders for the role as things stand, but things can change quickly when it comes to managerial pursuits.

Pearson boasts a wealth of experience in the Championship. He is widely seen as a safe pair of hands these days, but a return to Hull may not set pulses racing among the fan base.

Barry would be a much more exciting appointment, but the Bayern Munich assistant has never managed a club before. The 37-year-old would therefore be a calculated gamble.

Cook has just won promotion to League Two with Chesterfield, but he is unlikely to be listed too high up Hull City’s wish list.
