Gujarat v Chennai IPL Best Bets

Gujarat v Chennai predictions:

When: Friday 10 May, 7:30pm IST

Where: Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad

Watch: Star Sports and JioCinema

Best Odds: Gujarat 2.2, Chennai 1.67

A replay of last season’s Indian Premier League final will take place in dramatically different circumstances and without the glitz and glamour of a marquee showdown.

Nonetheless, there’s always value to be found on Indian cricket betting sites who are offering more markets than ever on the 2024 IPL, and they’ve brought us quite a bit of success recently including a humble profit on the match we previously covered.

Runners-up Gujarat Titans, who now have practically no chance of making the top four, will look to dish out the only loss that Chennai can afford to suffer in their own increasingly tense bid for play-offs qualification.

Here are our three best IPL predictions for Friday evening’s fixture in Ahmedabad.

The Numbers That Matter

  • Five of the last six IPL games in Ahmedabad were won chasing
  • Noor Ahmad has figures of 3-121 from 83 balls in Ahmedabad this year
  • Shivam Dube and Ruturaj Gaikwad each scored 25+ runs seven times this season
  • Shubman Gill and David Miller average 44 and 54 against Chennai’s last six bowlers

Gujarat’s batters struggling to clear the rope

Chennai come into this game with two wins from their last three matches and Gujarat with none from their three, but there have been a few instances across this season that suggest the result may not be as clear-cut as the gap between the teams on the table suggests.

This game could well be decided in Gujarat’s batting innings, for they come into this match as the slowest scoring team (8.45rpo) up against the most economical bowling side (8.55rpo) of the league this season.

Even with Chennai decimated by absences - such as Deepak Chahar, Mustafizur Rahman and Matheesha Pathirana - they were able to restrict Punjab to a meagre 139/9 in their last outing, with new inclusions Mitchell Santner and Simarjeet Singh impressing.

That said, Gujarat have won both of their two home games as outsiders this season (over Hyderabad and Mumbai), whilst Chennai lost their last three as away favourites (in Lucknow, Delhi and Hyderabad), so there are five reasons not to climb into Chennai’s favouritism with unbridled confidence.

For a slightly lower price, we’ve found a much more solid play amongst the many exotic markets offered by cricket betting apps

Gujarat are the slowest scoring team of the season in part due to a league-worst average of just 4.9 sixes per innings, which is almost half of the overall league average of 8.9 (after 57 games).

As a result of that, and conceding an average of 8.8 sixes per match in return, they have hit the most sixes of just one solitary game this season.

Prediction: Chennai to hit the most sixes - 1.57 @ 22Bet Sports

Sai as solid as Titan-ium at home

He’s by far their top scorer of the 2024 season and their most consistent performer with the bat in what has been a disappointing and underwhelming campaign for many of his teammates.

Sai Sudharsan has proven himself to be one of the most reliable but also explosive number threes of the competition, top scoring for the Titans six times already this season thanks in part to some poor returns from those around.

That might make backing him to be the top scorer an appealing play, but Indian cricket bookmakers are keeping him safe as a reason.

Instead, you can get 1.83 or a similar price for Sai to do what he has done in four of his five innings in Ahmedabad so far: exceed a total of 28.5 runs.

Against this bowling attack, he appears more than likely to. Sudharsan has never been dismissed by any of the six bowlers that Chennai used in their previous game, scoring an immense 79 runs from 7.4 overs.

Prediction: Sai Sudharsan over 28.5 runs - 1.83 @ 22Bet Sports

Rashid’s matchup problems to be an issue

Many Indian betting sites now offer ‘same game multi’ products whereby you can combine multiple outcomes to occur in the same match for a bigger payout, and this is one play that looks the goods based in part on some individual matchups.

Rashid Khan is yet to take more than one wicket at Narendra Modi Stadium this IPL season, averaging an unwanted 53 at an uncharacteristic economy rate of 8.83.

His last three matches, one of which was at home, aggregated him with wicketless figures of 0/111 that underlines the poor form he is in.

Gujarat Titans have sorely missed his potency as well as that of Mohammed Shami in their bowling, and Rashid’s history with some of Chennai’s batters suggest it’s not going to get any easier here.

As well as never taking Sudharsan’s wicket, Rashid has averages of 58 and 54 against the Chennai opening pair of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ajinkya Rahane, whilst taking the wickets of Shivam Dube and MS Dhoni only once at averages of 28 and 24.

Prediction: Rashid Khan under 1.5 wickets - 1.44 @ 22Bet Sports
