What to Consider When Betting the NFL Super Bowl

Loads of Action on the Game

When it comes to Super Bowl betting the market coverage is beyond extensive with an abundance of bet choices from moneylines, spreads and points totals to player and team props to half-time props.

And not only are the markets extensive, the action on the game supersedes all other US betting events outside of March Madness.

Because of its incredibly high television viewership, advertisers flock to purchase the much-coveted air time as millions tune in to watch the game, with many fans and bettors hosting themed ‘Super Bowl viewing parties’.

This immense popularity and heavy betting action makes finding value across the markets tough for novice and experienced bettors alike.

Fortunately, our expert betting guides peel through the massive betting markets across all the top oddsmakers to find the best bets to consider.

Betting Guides You Should Be Reading

Prop Bets

In addition to traditional bets on the spread, sportsbooks will post a large collection of prop bets for each game. Prop bets are bets on a specific action occurring or not occurring.

The cool thing about a prop bet is how you could be betting on anything.

When it comes to Super Bowl prop bets, you can bet on the outcome of everything from a particular player’s performance to the color of shoes worn by the halftime performer.

Prop bets can be split up into two types of bets: skilled prop bets and novelty or fun prop bets.

Bets on specific aspects of the game or a particular players performance are skilled props. Fun props can be about anything from the length of the National Anthem to the color of Gatorade that will be dumped by the winning team.

Prop bets provide more chances for NFL experts and new fans of the game to win. This means that there will most likely be a Super Bowl prop bet available that’s perfect for you.

Halftime Betting

Halftime shows are a tradition at all levels of American football games. The Super Bowl is no different, and its halftime show plays a major part in the event.

Famous musicians take to the stage and play to a rapturous audience for 30-35 minutes with massive spectacle incorporated.

It is generally noted that the Super Bowl halftime show is a high point in an artist’s career, considering the scale of the promotional and commercial value attributed to the event.

The show pays sterling tribute to pop culture, with anticipation for the performance at times running parallel with anticipation for the game itself.

Top NFL sportsbooks love to get in on the action, with markets offered on everything from the first song to wardrobe malfunctions.

Notable performances include Whitney Houston’s iconic rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" in 1991, and Bruce Springsteen’s long-awaited performance during Winter 2002.

Road to the NFL Championship

The 32-team NFL consists of two conferences, the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). Both conferences are made up of 16 teams each.

These conferences are split up into four smaller (North, South, East and West) divisions of four teams. Each division winner earns an automatic trip to the NFL playoffs (and ends up being the subject of a lot of Super Bowl betting).

The two non-winning division teams with the best record also make the playoffs. These are known as wild-card teams. The playoffs have four rounds total, with the fourth round being the title game, the Super Bowl.

The Wild Card weekend is the first round of playoffs. The third-seeded division winner hosts the sixth-seed wild card and the fourth seed hosts the fifth.

The first and second seeds from each conference receive a "bye," entitling them to advance automatically to the divisional playoffs, where they compete against the winners of the Wild Card Weekend.

The No. 1 seed hosts the worst surviving seed of the first round and the No. 2 seed plays the other team in the Divisional Playoffs.

The two surviving teams from each conference’s Divisional Playoff play against each other in the AFC and NFC Conference Championship. These games are hosted by the higher seed, with the winners going on to battle it out in the Super Bowl.
