Popular AFL Betting Markets

AFL betting comes with a wide range of markets, allowing bettors to wager on different aspects of the game. Here are some of the most popular AFL bet types:

  • Head-to-Head: This is a simple bet on which team will win the match.
  • Line Betting (Handicap): The betting site sets a points handicap, giving one team an advantage or disadvantage. The favored team must win by more than the set margin for the bet to be successful.
  • Over/Under (Total Points): Bet on whether the combined total points scored by both teams will be over or under a predetermined number.
  • Winning Margin: Predict the margin a team will win, usually categorized into specific point ranges (e.g., 1-39 points or 40+ points).
  • Same-Game Multi (also known as same-game parlay or bet builder): Combine multiple bets within a single AFL match (such as head-to-head, total points, and player disposals) for higher potential returns.
  • First Goal Scorer: Bet on which player will kick the first goal of the match.
  • Most Goals: Wager on which player will kick the most goals in a game.
  • Most Disposals: Bet which player will have the most disposals (kicks and handballs) in the match.
  • Player Performance Markets: Bet on individual player stats, such as total disposals, goals, tackles, or marks.
  • Quarter & Half-Time Betting: Bet on the winner of each quarter or half, rather than the full match result.
  • Race to 20/40/60 Points: Predict which team will reach a specific points total first.
  • Brownlow Medal Betting: Wager on the player who will win the AFL’s best and fairest award at season’s end.
  • Norm Smith Medal Betting: Bet on the player who will be awarded best on ground in the AFL Grand Final.
  • Coleman Medal Betting: Bet which player will finish the season as the league’s top goal scorer.
  • AFL Premiership Winner: Predict which team will win the AFL Grand Final.
  • Top 4/Top 8 Finish: Bet whether a team will finish in the top four or top eight on the ladder by the end of the regular season.
  • Wooden Spoon (Last Place Finish): Bet on which team will finish last on the AFL ladder.

What is Australian Rules Football?

  • Players: 18 per team, plus 4 interchange players.
  • Field: Large and oval-shaped
  • Governing body: Australian Football League (AFL)

Aussie Rules Football, officially known as Australian Rules Football or simply “footy,” is a fast-paced, contact sport. It is Australia's most popular spectator sport.

The aim is to score more points than the opposition by kicking the ball through the opposing team’s goal posts. You get six points for a goal and one for a "behind."

Players can run with the ball (which looks like a rugby ball) but must bounce it every 15 meters. They can also pass the ball by striking it with their fists or kicking it. When players catch a kicked ball that has traveled at least 15 meters without being touched, they are awarded a “mark” and a free kick.

Players are allowed to tackle, but only between the shoulders and knees.

Games last 60 minutes with four quarters of 20 minutes each.

Responsible Gambling with AFL Betting Sites

We at Gambling.com take responsible gambling very seriously. Our main goals are to connect you with reliable betting operators while maintaining a safe gambling environment for all users.

AFL betting sites must follow strict protocols to spot, prevent, and reduce gambling-related harm. These aren't optional measures; they're legal requirements and essential safeguards that protect vulnerable players from developing problematic habits.

We always keep these requirements in mind whenever we review and rate a betting site, and we only partner with licensed operators that adhere to legal standards. Moreover, all betting sites that we review here have responsible gambling tools and resources to help you stay in control of your betting.
