Thanks in no small part to goals from Conor O’Donnell, Oisin Gallen and Ciaran Moore, Donegal stormed to an astounding 3-26 to 0-15 success over the Royals.

This set up a finale to the current inter-county Gaelic football season that will see teams with two very contrasting styles going head-to-head at Croke Park. 

Whereas Kerry can very much be classified as a kicking team, their O’Donnell County opponents are known for a running game that requires high levels of fitness and a clinical edge in front of the posts.

This is what makes their meeting this weekend so fascinating, and with Jack O’Connor and Jim McGuinness in charge of Kerry and Donegal respectively, the battle on the sideline could be every bit as compelling as what is happening on the field.

A Tight Final Expected In Croke Park

While both teams have lost games in the 2025 championship – interestingly, against the counties that the other defeated at the semi-final stage – it is hard to argue against the fact that Kerry and Donegal have been the two best sides in this year’s Sam Maguire Cup.

There haven’t been a huge amount of championship showdowns between the counties over the years, but there were a couple of notable meetings during Jim McGuinness’ first spell as Donegal boss from 2011 to 2014. 

On their way to winning the 2012 All-Ireland title, the Ulster men recorded a two-point triumph over Kerry in a quarter-final encounter at Croke Park.

That game brought the curtain down on Jack O’Connor’s second stint as Kingdom boss, but his successor Eamonn Fitzmaurice had greater joy when the teams renewed acquaintances in an All-Ireland showpiece in September 2014.

In what proved to be McGuinness’ final game as manager for at least a decade, Donegal were on the receiving end of a three-point reversal.

A thrilling draw (1-20 apiece) followed in the ‘Super 8s’ five years later, but it has taken until now for their next clash to take place. On the basis of their recent duels, you can expect that this latest affair will go right down to the wire.

Clifford Displaying Midas Touch In Front Of Goal

Going into Sunday’s final, there is absolutely no doubt as to who will emerge as the top scorer in this year’s All-Ireland SFC. 

Kerry talisman David Clifford is certain to come away with this particular accolade, with a 28-point gap between him and his nearest rivals – Galway's Rob Finnerty and Louth's Sam Mulroy. 

From the cumulative tally of 77 points he has accrued to date, 24 of those come from the eight goals he has netted. 

While the new rules for Gaelic football have led to a lot of two-pointers (something he is also adept at), Clifford hasn’t forgotten about how crucial it can be to raise a green flag.

He hadn’t previously rattled the net in his five previous semi-final appearances, but the 26-year-old altered that stat in last Saturday week’s penultimate round win over Tyrone. 

While he hasn’t scored a goal in his four All-Ireland final outings to date, there is every chance of him finally doing so this Sunday.

If he does manage to get past a top netminder in Shaun Patton, it could give Kerry plenty of oxygen. 

Though there could be plenty of twists and turns over the course of the action, Clifford is currently 11/2 on betting apps to score the first goal of the game and for the Kingdom to follow up with a win.

Kerry Have Been Producing Strong Second Half Showings

While Kerry ended up being convincing winners in their recent showdowns with Armagh and Tyrone, it wasn’t entirely plain sailing in either game.

An astonishing spell saw the Kingdom registering 14 points without reply in the second half of their quarter-final clash with Armagh.

However, before that Jack O’Connor’s side found themselves adrift by the slenderest of margins at the interval (1-11 to 0-13) and five behind in the early moments of the second half.

While they did lead by three points at the midway stage of their subsequent meeting with Tyrone, another astonishing scoring spree saw them moving 10 points clear in the second half prior to a mini resurgence from the Red Hand in the closing minutes.

Donegal have also produced excellent second-half displays in their last three games against Louth, Monaghan and Meath, but the O’Donnell men were five points to the good at the break in the latter game last Sunday week.
