Best Oscars Bets:

Voting on the 94th Academy Awards came to a close on Tuesday. The 9,000-plus voters had five days to declare their selections in the 24 categories and the vote winners in each category will be made public at the famous Hollywood award ceremony on Sunday, March 27.

Our Oscars betting system – which scrutinises results at the 75th British Academy Film Awards and 27th Critics' Choice Awards – suggests The Power of The Dog will win the Best Picture award and its director, Jane Campion, will be awarded the Best Director accolade.

The odds make it pretty clear too – New Zealander Campion is 1/40 to win Best Director, her movie is now 10/11 for Best Picture and it is 4/9 to win the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar.

Indeed, there are numerous odds-on shots amongst the major awards – Will Smith is 1/8 in the Oscar Best Actor betting for his role in King Richard – it limits betting opportunities amongst the leading awards, but there is still some value to be found.

Flee Could Run Away With Best Documentary

There are plenty of fine betting opportunities amongst the lesser-known categories.

Flee, an animated Danish documentary feature, has three nominations in three categories – it has an exceptional chance in the Best Documentary Feature section.

The subject matter for this award, given current global affairs, could not be rawer. Flee tells the story of a displaced refugee who was forced to leave his home country when it became a warzone.

It may have come up short at the Golden Globes, but Flee has won a hatful of Documentary Feature awards and 3/1 is available with the best betting sites about this tear-jerking film. That’s outstanding value in our book.

Can Money Buy Dune Cinematography Success?

With 10 Oscar nominations – but no representation in the Best Actor, Best Actress, or Best Director categories – Dune is something of an enigma.

It will doubtlessly collect several awards if the Oscars betting odds are to be believed – it is 1/16 in the Best Visual Effects, 1/7 in Best Sound and 1/5 in Best Score categories.

However, it could get turned over in the Best Cinematography category, despite being an odds-on shot.

For a film with a $165 million budget, Dune should have some stonking motion-picture photography and special effects. But the suspicion is the lower budget The Power of The Dog will be appreciated for the general composition of its key scenes, set lighting, locations and camera angles.

Watch the film more than once and you might agree it features some exceptional camera work.

Nightmare For Dune in Best Production Design

The psychological thriller Nightmare Alley is in contention for four Academy Awards. We believe its best hope is in the Best Production Design category.

This movie has been a bust at the box office – failing to recoup its $60 million budget – and Rotten Tomatoes, the American review-aggregation website, gives the movie just a 7.5/10 average rating.

However, while paying customers have not been enamoured by the film, critics seem to love it. The Bradley Cooper/Cate Blanchett led movie has already won three Best Production Design awards – San Diego Film Critics Society, American Cinematheque, San Francisco Bay Area Film Critics Circle.

Top betting sites have had their Oscars odds open for months and, such is the faith in the Golden Globe form, winners of the key Globes are favourites in the equivalent Academy Award markets.

As mentioned above, one of the shortest-priced of all contenders is Will Smith in the Oscar Best Actor betting with virtually all betting apps going odds-on. It took Smith 19 years and six nominations to win his first Best Actor accolade at the Golden Globes – and that came this year for his role in King Richard.

The original Fresh Prince of Bel-Air has only had two previous nominations for Best Actor at the Academy Awards but in 2022, rated a 1/8 shot with even the most generous betting sites, he should finally get his hands on an overdue Oscar.

His potential Oscar-winning role came in the Reinaldo Marcus Green-directed King Richard, a movie where he plays the lead character – the father of tennis stars Serena and Venus Williams.

Oscar Betting Predictions: Stats Go Against Belfast

Remarkably, given Smith’s prohibitive short price, King Richard is given little chance in the Best Picture award. It is as long as 50/1 with Bet365.

The Power of the Dog won the Best Motion Picture Drama film at the 2022 Golden Globes and is odds-on to collect the Best Picture in the Oscars 2022 betting odds.

A western-style suspense film shot in New Zealand, The Power of the Dog is the clear favourite with most UK bookmakers. Belfast – a Kenneth Branagh directed film depicting his childhood in his troubled hometown during the 1960s – had been an early contender but has drifted way out of contention on Oscars week.

Worryingly for Belfast backers, the black and white movie collected just one award at the Golden Globes despite having seven nominations. West Side Story had four Globe nominations and collected three.

Since 2001, A Beautiful Mind (2001), Chicago (2002), The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (2003), Slumdog Millionaire (2008), The Artist (2011), Argo (2012), 12 Years a Slave (2013), Moonlight (2016), Greenbook (2018) and Nomadland (2020) have all won a Best Picture Globe and then doubled up in the Best Picture category at the Academy Awards.

Being even more objective, if Belfast was unable to collect a single award from the 11 nominations it received at the British Independent Film Awards, what chance will it have in Hollywood?
