Trump and Bernie Still Favorites Despite Biden Announcement

Joe Biden has finally announced his intent to run for president in the 2020 election.

Unsurprisingly, the long-expected announcement was considered by oddsmakers when they set the lines on who will head to the White House next; the former VP's odds to return to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue barely shifted following the announcement.

Biden's current odds to win the presidential election in 2020 are +800 after posting odds of around +1000 prior to joining the race. But even with his odds shortening, Biden still sits behind President Trump at +125 and Sen. Bernie Sanders at +550.

Here's the video Biden's campaign put out to announce his candidacy:

Did Biden Miss His Window?

Prior to his two-term stint as the VP of the United States, Joe Biden was a senator from Delaware for over 35 years. During his time as a senator, Biden ran for president twice, once in 1988 and again in 2008, before bowing out and joining the Obama ticket.

Will Biden's third time running be the charm? Biden's announcement did give him a boost in the polls, where he was already leading for both the Democratic Nomination as well as head-to-head should he face Trump in a general election.

However, a growing number of pundits believe Biden's best days will be his first.

As the base of the Democratic Party moves further left, Biden could struggle to appease the loudest voices in the party, as he is sure to run a more moderate campaign than Sanders and Harris.

Had Biden jumped in the race sooner, the former VP could have attacked Trump on Russia prior to the big Mueller Report release as well as garnered key financial support from within the party like Bernie has.

Worth noting, Biden's odds to win the Democratic Primary did slightly shrink this week, pushing him into second-favorite to represent the party in November ahead of Harris but behind Sanders. Overall, though, the US presidential election odds saw little movement following Biden's announcement.

Mueller Report Findings Solidify Trump's Odds for Now

Leaving opinions about the results of the Mueller Report out of it, President Trump's chances of seeing any of sort of criminal charges diminished following the report's release.

Despite a wealth of pundits spending the last two years expecting Mueller to reveal the bombshell that takes down Trump, the President seems more poised than ever to enter the 2020 campaign with expectations of a second term.

The oddsmakers clearly agree, setting Trump's current odds to win the 2020 election at around +125, well below Bernie at +550 and Biden at +800.

Bernie Gaining Steam

Bernie Sanders, the self-described democratic socialist, tried his hand at shaking-up the Democratic nomination in 2016 but was unsuccessful. He has similar plans in 2020 with what many see as a more realistic shot at the nomination.

Sanders is a registered Independent in the Senate but has run for president on the Democratic side the last two cycles. His views certainly align more with the progressive wing of the party than the more moderate but established candidates.

But despite what many consider radical views, Sanders' cries for free education and healthcare are resonating more now than even in the 2016 race.

The oddsmakers have also watched Bernie capture a notable portion of the party base, which is why they seem to disagree with the polls and have the senator from Vermont favored to win the election over Biden.

If Biden can't use the recent momentum in the polls to capture a sizable lead early, expect Bernie to rise in the polls and become a real threat to win the nomination.
