Guide to Betting the Men’s and Women’s US Tennis Open 2017

If you're a tennis betting enthusiast or just a fan of the sport, you're probably well-aware of all the stars and fans flocking to the Flushing Meadows neighbourhood of Queens, New York City, for the US Open this year. The tournament, packed with the best men and women tennis players in the world, is set to ramp up this weekend.
The two-week Grand Slam extravaganza will see 700,000+ spectators filter through the three main stadiums and 16 outer courts of the Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre. The event will see 128 players battle it out for the trophy, but we have whittled the options down to top seeds, strong contenders, and rank outsiders!
Who to Back Betting the Men’s US Open
Last year’s Men’s Singles champion Stan Wawrinka has already withdrawn from the US Open due to a knee injury, meaning that the title is very much up for grabs. The hot favourite is Roger Federer, who has been on fire this year following a long break in 2016 due to injury and subsequent surgery.
His renaissance started with the Australian Open, where he beat current world number one Rafael Nadal to take the trophy, and then at Wimbledon, where he cruised by an injured Marin Cilic in the final. At 36, even Federer believes winning a third Grand Slam this year would be “a joke,” but it would also see him overtake Nadal as top seed.
NetBet is currently offering odds of 6/4, while Nadal is lagging behind at 5/2. Meanwhile, Scottish superstar Andy Murray is attracting odds of 15/2. The former world #1 crashed out of Wimbledon in the quarter-finals. Croatian player Marin Cilic might be one to watch out for, having recovered from the injury that made him a handicapped opponent against Federer.
He has previously won the US Open in 2014, and has odds of 16/1 at NetBet. So too is Australian Nick Kyrgios, who put on a stunning display at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 in Cincinnati, although he eventually lost in the final to Bulgarian player Grigor Dimitrov, who is also at 16/1.
If Kyrgios can keep the unforced errors to a minimum, he could be a solid outside bet. The trick for betting on a Men's tournament winner outright is to stick to a quality betting strategy so when questionable odds or a long shot bet arises, like with Kyrgios, punters are prepared to make a shrewd decision.
Who to Back Betting the Women’s US Open
With Serena Williams out for the season due to her pregnancy, many female tennis players are stepping out of her long and illustrious shadow. Wimbledon Champion Garbine Muguruza will bring her aggressive style to the hard surface, and NetBet has her pegged as the favourite with odds of 9/2.
That places her ahead of current world number one Karolina Pliskova, who is hitting odds of 13/2. The Czech star was runner-up at Flushing Meadows in 2016, and will be looking to correct that mistake. Like Muguruza, she portrays a powerful, aggressive character on the court, but with a killer serve as well.
Pliskova has already defeated Muguruza this year during the Fed Cup in February, so it would be interesting to see these two favourites reach the final. German player Angelique Kerber returns to defend her US Open title from 2016, but NetBet seems unsure that she can keep hold of the trophy, offering odds of 14/1.
This places her alongside Maria Sharapova who’s also at 14/1, Elina Svitolina at 11/1, and Johanna Konta, also at 11/1. Yet after a stunning 2016 that saw her win the US and the Australian Opens, as well as silver during the 2016 Olympic Games, Kerber has struggled to find her footing this year.
Defending her title may be the motivation she needs to return to the heights of last year’s glory. Serena’s sister Venus Williams is attracting odds of 18/1 on NetBet, despite the fact that she reached the final round of both Wimbledon and the Australian Open. In the latter she faced off against her sister, eventually losing.
However, Venus now holds the record, between both men and women, with 75 Grand Slams played, and her return to Flushing Meadows will make it 76. Another player worth keeping an eye on is fellow American Madison Keys, who is on the comeback from a wrist injury that kept her out of the Australian Open.
Having reinstated Lindsay Davenport to her coaching team, Keys is focused on regaining her form. Despite some early exits in some other tournaments this year, she managed to win the 2017 Bank of the West Classic, defeating Muguruza in the semi-finals. At 16/1, she could be worth a punt.
